Just remembered I forgot to post that I saw more flanellette bed sets in our bigger B & M's. Sorry, can't remember what they had though apart from plain colours as well as striped as DD has decided that she'd rather have some brushed cotton pj's to save us some money.

Chirpychick, I've just been to let the chickens out and it's sooo much colder here as well. A real "nearly winter" nip in the air!

Another pair of thick woolly socks in the winter/christmas box.
Reading the MET office website and they are reporting a possibility of snow towards next weekend at all levels in the north east of scotland and the wind to go round to the North, so enjoy the slightly milder temps when we can!

Morning all. We had a lovely clear, sunny but cold autumn day here yesterday and as a result we had an overnight frost . Not very much but the roof of my neighbour's car and my tool store roof (both in the shade in the morning) were frosted over when I got up just after 7am. But the house stayed warm enough - my max min thermometer says min last night was 15.9C indoors.

It's fired me up to finish off my winter prep though :). Haven't got too much to do but would like some linings for my front door curtains - I've got 2 fleece blankets surplus to requirements so will see if they will fit. Then I need to repair a few lines of stitching on my winter eiderdown - the top layer is patchwork taffeta and some of the patching needs stitching back together. Well worth the effort as when it's on the bed it looks and feels so luxurious.

  • Brrr - it's certainly a bit nippy this morning. Even the downstairs windows are steamed up. Time to think about the first fire of the year, maybe. The coal cellar is stocked and we have a good wood pile - just need some more kindling, and we're ready to go. This weekend I need to change my mum's curtains for her winter ones to make sure she's nice and snug, then hang our new door curtains to keep out the chill.

I think I'll be in search of fleeces to make some more insulation at the windows - thanks for the suggestions on that.:A It should make us much warmer, as we've got lots of windows (and old sashes too, so hardly draughtproof, even with our best efforts to block the gaps).

It's a lovely sunny day though, and the birds are singing appreciatively at the bird table. I'm sure that in a nest somewhere the sparrow that fed for 10 minutes yesterday is still sleeping off a sunflower seed binge. ;) It's the longest I've ever seen a bird feed at the table.

To those of you who have them, how much did you pay? Are they easy to inflate?

Also, our house is a typical 1930's-built semi. Until a year ago, our chimney held a back boiler but is currently empty (the builders smoothed off the walls but that's about it - we will install a woodstove eventually). Do you think a "small" would be the right size?

Edited to add: Chirpy, there was frost here this morning, too. I've got some onion sets to get in today - hope it isn't too late for them.

My woodburner has been despatched:) Manufacturers must have been working like mad as we've only had to wait three weeks instead of the six they'd quoted. Chimney passed it's HETAS test yesterday so now we're just waiting for a date from the installers:)

We want a woodburner, too. I'm curious - what have you been quoted for the installation? I need a guide about how much to save up.

Hi - I dont know if this is naughty of me or not - im not recommending you buy anything from this Company but I *USED* to work in association with them and they were brilliant with helping people (even if they didn't place an order) and so I had a quick google and found their chimney balloon measuring guide as i thought it might help you.

As i say i no longer work in anyway for/with them (currently FT HW!) but i remembered how good their advice was and thought you could benefit from their website - not necessarily their services - though their services are great :rotfl: im trying very hard to cover myself i may need that shovel after all... and not for snow :rotfl:

    :eek:Frost!

    That's spurred me into action!

TBH I'm nearly there, just the odd bit to do here & there.

Def chilly this morning but there's a good breeze so the dog's duvets / covers are being washed this morning - one's out on the line and another in the washing machine (I really don't know how one dog can produce so much washing!:D). He's really old now so I have 2 doubled duvets on the floor for his bed as his joints are a bit worse for wear now:( and the extra softness seems to help:). Multiple that by one bed downstairs and another upstairs and it's a lot of washing!

Does anyone know where I can get cheap leggings online?

I got a pair from Pri*mark a couple of months ago, they're quite thin but would be ideal for wearing under jogging bottoms to walk the dog in the cold mornings but I stupidly only bought one pair.

    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!

As a temporary measure take a potato sack, fill it full of straw and bung it up the chimney, we use this method in both of our open fires and it works a treat.

I opened up a small stapler and put a few staples round the edges. The stapler just fit behind the radiator, it was a bit fiddly but it worked.

I tried doing that with putting net up a fence in the garden for my morning glories but it didn't work, meant to borrow the staple gun from work & do it with but I kept forgetting it...

My walls behind the rads are solid, so I don't think the staple gun would work, plus it's a very tight gap (barely enough space for my fingers). But I have got no more nails pads left from the curtain rails, so I wonder if they would do the trick? I could use a ruler to push them against the wall for adhesion...
