Today I nipped into Primark. Didn't get to look at much as the LO and OH both hate the shop. I did manage to get myself some flannel PJs and slippers. Also got the LO some fleeces and long sleeved tops.

I also managed to get a free in car charger (via the OHs free £10 O2 voucher) Typically the fuse had blown in the car so will need to replace that.

I'm off from work and college on the 21st and 24th so I will be gutting the house then and really assessing what needs doing.

I wish my landlady would hurry up and decide whats happening with the back door & livingroom. I have all the stuff in to decorate (actually had it for over a year now!) and I'm not going to do it if she's going to have builders in. I may just start on the bathroom when I get a chance, so much on over the next week or so though :(

Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!

Hi. Loving this thread, although i dont post :)

Do you mind if i ask a question please? Where do you all buy your wellies? The children and I all need new ones, but i dont know where to get them for a reasonable price. Any ideas would be great.
    Thanks.

My mil gets kids ones from charity shops and carboot sales. They rarely get worn out, as not many kids will be in the same pair for two winters, and it beats paying £10 a pop for something that doesn't get loads of wear. She doesn't pay more than £1

I got mine in a garden centre a few years back in the sale.

Feels really autumnal tonight. It's dull and rainy but we are quite cosy indoors, wearing layers.

I just thought I would nip back on to say - if you prepared medicine kits/power cut kits etc last year that didn't get used then make sure you check them as I have just gone through mine and had to bin a bit of medicine - cough medicine that kind of thing as it had gone out of date.

Also I was going to buy more tea lights but I found I have about 300 LOL so I think I will be safe to save myself a couple of pounds ;)

Like you always happy when I have not needed to use the medicines in the first aid cupboard but you do need to throw out old items and replace but like having items in just in case...

I've started using tea lights to found some in Asda well priced(not purchased yet)but they last upto 9 hours I think and are larger and I haven't seen anything suitable to put them in or on...

Can't do anything by the tealights(such as reading etc...)but they are so pretty and I quite like putting them on and resting.

I must remember to buy matches. I must remember to buy matches! :D

I have a massive box of matches and still misplaced them and found myself buying some Swan Vistas the other week in an off license...

Wellies not much choice around here(and that includes the shoe shops)at present perhaps that will improve when October arrives, I found we have a chain of shops called The Factory Outlet and they seem to have some good bargains including wellies, shoes etc...

went out earlier to do some more foraging and i must say i was a little surprised. the rowan berries that normally still have some berries left come spring have been picked clean from what was a very plentiful crop

the dog roses are STILL blooming yet a great deal are ready to eat so i picked both rose petals and hips a plenty. the brambles are still not ready to eat even having left them alone about another 10 days, not more than a handful ripe and i had to leave them this time as my daughter got something in her eye and we had to go home to flush it out

i did grab one in passing and gave it to my daughter who was complaining that's what we went out for (got to the roses first) and i kid you not at least 2 dozen birds flew out of the bush! never have i seen anything like it and they were eating the ones that aren't even ripe yet!

i've been saving aside some raw peanuts from packages of nuts and fruit from approved foods. we don't really like them raw and i'd planned to dry roast them a bit and use them in cooking but i think i'll be feeding them to the birds this year instead. it must be hitting them very hard the poor weather and/or they know something we don't and are fattening up now!
  • We brought a pair of heavy curtains off ebay last year and we have one over the front door and one over the back. Our kitchen and living room is open plan and our backdoor only a few feet away from the sofa so we were getting quite a chill from it. However the downstairs was remarkably warmer last year so I highly recommend it.

I went to Evans last weekend, it's the first time I have been in there for at least a year. Someone had brought me something I needed to exchange and I was walking around with this look permanently attached to my face  I honestly don't know how they stay open because I couldn't justify their prices! In the end I exchanged my stuff for a hoody, leggings and socks (ever the practical) but I was in there for about 90 minutes trying to work out how to best spend the money.
Most shops we went in bar £land and a few "cheapy shops" we found shockingly expensive, people dont spend, the cost goes up :S
I have noticed clothes and basics are selling for more on ebay because they are in a higher demand.
However, I am still shocked at how much people spend on their new babies (£16 for 1 outfit ) carboots are so under rated!

I brought 2 a few weeks ago - the regular ones everyone buys are currently £4.96 - but if you spend £30 on home cook and dine (assuming you were going to anyway!) there is a voucher code for £5 off TD-6HK4.
When we brought ours they had £5 off when you spent £20 on toys and clothing and we happened to be buying a play gym and some baby stuff so paid in 2 transactions and my 2 blankets were free :)
They do have some cheaper fleeces which are on their "Direct" website but I don't think they are as big.
    HTH.

    *********************************

I was reading last night how bad this winter is supposed to be getting

I am thankful as our friend has promised to replace most of our "blown" windows before the end of October, this should make upstairs much warmer this year. But have to hope that we can get him back around next year to fix the downstairs ones that have now also gone!

My biggest concern is giving birth in a snow trapped car.

I have had all my focus on being ready for when the baby comes and kind of kidded myself into thinking I was prepared for Winter because after everything I did last year it was then very warm.

But I need to ensure we have a car kit, rucksack for hubby to take to work when he walks, some food stores, matches, more candles and some more ready made formula.

I have put some bottles of water in the shed, as soon as the snow starts falling hubby will bring them indoors (don't really have anywhere to store indoors), we have a plan for the Guinea pig and are waiting for payday to stock up on dog food.

I am desperately trying to make money on ebay for a car seat (essential), blind, & changing bag to finish the baby list off. Have just won cellular blankets, ordered cot sheets, MIL has brought fleece blankets for the cot and I have a snow suit and everything like that.
    Then, I need a coat.
Then, I shall try my hardest to get some money to buy a few thermals and stock up the cupboards and medicine cabinet.

I was being a bit naive in thinking this year would be mild again I think, especially if the long range forecasts are anything to go by!

And if it is mild well at least I am prepared for next year! :rotfl:

I had DS1 17 years ago come november, it was a hard winter that I wasn't really prepared for, & I certainly hadn't expected an emergency c-section (yeah, ok, there was a clue when I said emergency ;-) ).

We can't do anything about where you give birth, but do make sure you're ready. Get enough clothes for baby & enough nappies & all the stuff you'll need. Be ready to hole up in the house with baby. Use the heating to keep baby warm enough & sort payment later. Eat & drink well.

Don't get sainsbobs wellies... Got some for DS2 the other year when all the hand me downs & car boot bargains wouldn't fit him, & they just did not last. I can remember mum buying us mother care wellies, but I guess there was less choice then...

Chirpychick - you need a source of heating for baby in case of powercuts. Obviously one that is safe and gives off no fumes.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
