  • Our high street (shields) is really bad these days. its full of phone shops and pawn brokers. Tons of empty shops, has been the past couple of years. The market no longer has bargains and is hardly on and even the charity shops are getting too dear. I shop mostly online now.

Hi MM I was born in SS and I remeber King Street used to be a great place to shop, especially when Binns was still there. When we were teenagaers we would dres up and spend all afternoon walking up and down, popping into shops but mainly trying to meet some boys!
It is awful now, I think it went downhill after the Metro came, what a shame, especially when we have the beautiful coast.
  • Hi riverside girl, yeh Bins used to be considered posh! It's just terrible there now, you can't guarantee you'll get what you go down for, I am not even sure you'ld find boys haha. It's just turning into a dive really. Although they have spent money on a new swimming pool and I think they are doing up the sea front, although havn't got that far this year at all as the weather was so bad.

On the plus side, I ordered dd's shoes off ebay on wednesday and they came today! So Clarkes down town can away and tiddle now. I'm not sure if I mentioned it but the girl was trying to get me to buy an F fitting when dd is and always has been a G cos they only had F fitting shoes in her size!
*I've just to buy her one more pair sized up and wellies and thats her all sorted

*Got my gas on now and have fished out my wooly socks.
    * I need clothes, desperate for a winter coat and boots.

I don't know how Binns survives in Darlington either. It was the place to go...

Then you get direct competition which is silly...yesterday I found a rather exclusive(but not badly priced bakers and they set up next to Greggs)It might work that you attract business from your rival but I think it seems a bit crazy to me...

Sainsbury's on the town have increased their store size but I found nothing really new in the food range(just possibly on the clothes and electrical goods)I think they have added or increased a caf! area. And the whole carpark is covered now.

But there is still only the same money available and again when i was in(I won't be hurrying back specially)it was practically empty.

  • Well the horrendous weather we had has eased off a bit so back to the winter prepping. It was actually a good thing as it made it easier to think about the winter hitting us. I think this is going to be a hard winter, much the same as last winter was here in Greece.

Last year it came late (as it will this year by the look of it) and we got spells of very cold and dry (with sun) and very very wet and warmer. It's a bit hard to cater for the days when its very wet and warm as it tends to be too warm for an overcoat...but if you don't wear one you get soaked to the skin. The ideal would be a light waterproof that will stand up to the gale force winds and driving rain that comes with them. I have not found one yet! The average temp in the daytime is around 14 degrees but it drops at night and got to minus ten last winter on quite a few nights.

I try to carry a brolly but then the wind destroys them in minutes. I did think of a poncho type waterproof cape so I could wear it on the scooter...I might just have a look for one on Amazon.

The very cold sunny days aren't as much as a problem except you have to dress in layers in case the sun suddenly comes out and the temperature shoots up ( or down if it goes in ). Last year we bought jumper and leggings ski thermals in Lidl's and they were great so they are back on the menu this year. If its cold and dry I will be riding the scooter to save on petrol so will be layering up again. I have a great collection of fleecy tops and warm jackets. One of them has sleeves that roll down so you can cover your hands up with them.

I wear good leather gloves and have pashminas and warm scarves to breach the gap between my crash helmet and the top of my jacket. I wear good leather bike boots on the scooter in the winter as you need some grip if you put your feet down onto wet gravel!

Damn, I can hear thunder in the distance again....off to get my washing in before it buckets down.....have a great weekend folksxxx

Last night I was sat on the sofa with pocket/hand warmers in each slipper, one in each hand then my hands in my sleeves and then in my pockets, with 6 candles burning on the coffeetable near me, I think I might have been cold :D :rotfl: Today I'll dig out the quilts to put on the beds and sofas. Think I might try to get the fleeces on the curtains as well. Must also sort out the heating settings as it was too warm this morning in my room

My parents had a powercut last night. For some reason they seem they have them more often than I do and I live in a 1930s terrace whereas they live in a 1990 detached. Apparently, looking at tw1tter, it was quite wide spread again. This has encouraged me to make sure I keep my phone and stuff charged up and to restock my emergency basket.

Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!
  • Last night was quite cold here, I am considering putting the fleece under sheet on the bed when I change the sheets later. I remember last October we had a mini heatwave, I hope we do this year! Forgot to look at fleece throws when I was in Tesco yesterday thought, want some for the windows.

Cheeky Clarks! I wouldn't have got them either. & silly Clarks, if the girl had done as she should have & said they'd order them in, you'd have gone back another holiday & told everyone how pleased you were with the service.

Too hot at night at the moment... I'd put my flannelette sheet under me & the thin duvet on my bed instead of the smooth cotton sheet
& blanket over the duvet cover. Then DS2 wet my bed, so I had the thick duvet on the bed while washing & drying the thin 1. Warm when I get in, but it gets too hot for now.

Being in the North East area I've enjoyed the little chats about South Shields, they are spending money on it though so let's hope it improves!
Thought that you might be interested to know that these fleecy jackets http://www.cottontraders.co.uk/jackets+coats-/soft-fleece-lined-jacket/invt/ad10792/ are available at the Royal Quays Outlet at North Shields today for £22 each instead of the online price of £44.
Lovely and snuggly, I'm thinking that they might be useful to keep in the car? Maybe they're available in other outlets around the country?
