I have been assiduously read this thread thinking "Hmm good idea, I'll do that", or "buy that" or "make that".

The time has come to face the fact that i need a list.

    So

Go to Dunelms and buy tension rods for dining room and DS bedroom
Buy fleece blankets to hang off said tension rods
Buy a couple of 5l bottles of water - just in case
Replace empty gas bottle in caravan so we can decamp there if it really goes t*ts up power wise
    Buy some long life milk
Make sure i have bread making stuff stocked up - although that includes powdered milk so maybe the above might not be necessary
    Buy DS a new coat
    Check gloves, hats, scarves
    Snow shovel?
    Salt for paths

I have pasta, loo rolls ;), soup in freezer, freezers full to bursting with enough meals for a siege. Don't use de-icer (what's wrong with a scraper? Or a CD box - which it often ends up being) or screen wash (washing up liquid seems to do the same job), tho is there stuff that stops it freezing? Hmm What else? I have an emergency power cut box with candles, matches, torch and wind up torch and radio that does work off batteries, and spare batteries.

I'll add to this over time. THanks everyone for your tips and suggestions.

Edit - sorry, tryingtobethrifty, hadn't read your post before i said about de-icer. I guess it is "horses for courses". Good idea about the little HW bottles.
I wanna be in the room where it happens
  • Hi All, I'm a new poster here has any one got any ideas where I can get reasonably priced curtains for a bay window? I'm buying my first home and it's got a lovely original arched sash window bay but I think it's going very drafty in the winter! Also need curtains for the bedroom sash widows.

I usually make my own curtains but maybe EBay or Dunelm you could get some reasonably priced ones.

I bought some detachable thermal linings for mine so that I can use them with any curtains, they'll do at least 20 years I reckon so worth the money though they weren't expensive.

    2) Lidl's offer on Cushelle is more expensive than the 2x 18 rolls for £5 of whichever brand was on offer in Poundstretcher (and possibly Home Bargains). I don't know how the roll length compares, has anyone bought both brands and can compare? We're on a septic tank and the plumbing doesn't like thick stuff like Andrex, and my DDs use unnecessarily massive quantities. I usually get the 9 for £1.99 in Tesco, Discount Brands.

you might like the lidl recycled paper it's 10 rolls for £1.65 (last i checked) it's in a long green package, just 1 roll high so they are easy to spot. we use it and it's not super thick so it shouldn't clog up your septic tank

I`ve just bought some a few weeks ago for our bay, i got them from poundstretcher. The bay ones were 90 x 90" and were £34.99. I love long curtains but unfortunately my radiators are in the bay so i had to shorten them. Someone on here (sorry can`t for the life of me remember who) gave some great advice and i washed them on a cool wash (to make sure they didn`t shrink after altering - they were marked as dry clean only) ironed them and then cut off the tops and unpicked the header tape. Cut the curtains to the right size and sewed the tape back on. I hand sewed them all which took a while but now they look fantastic, i`m really pleased with them. They are only thin curtains but i hooked cream fleece onto the lower part of the header tape behind them and they are great.

Just de lurking to say this thread is great. I've been stocking up for weeks whilst imagining the horrors of cold, ice and snow which is why it feels so weird pegging loads of washing out in a summer dress on the 1st October

Its hard to beleive that it's October already!

I'm not sure if this is winter prep, or just housework, but I have one more set of curtains to clean, windows to clean and a car to clean and polish over the next week.

Thanks for the reminder re dog food :D We very nearly got caught out last year as usually the snow clears pretty quick here but our deliveries were severely affected and I ordered the dog and cat food way too close to xmas as well so plan to get a sack in this month as well as stocking up on cat food.
I did have a few tins of sardines and tuna on standby so they wouldn't have starved but it was a worry.

Phew its too hot here to think of much winter prepping atm but its given me a chance to wash up the curtains, pillows and quilts etc so they're all fresher.:D

DH and I have made another wood store today to hopefully hold all the wood we're having delivered on Thursday. Used a free pallet from his work, used wood and perspex we had in the garage to make sides (left ventilation gaps) plus timber treated it as well. Not as nice looking as the one we made last week and it's taken up a big chunk of the patio but it will do the job:) I think we should just buy a tarpaulin from Lidl at £8.99 but DH wants to make a lift up lid out of more wood and perspex. He'd have to faff to do it and buy hinges but he said it would look nicer. Seems like a waste of time to me:o
