Congrats to Angel_Jenny and Rising on your knitting - I think something you knit yourself will be cosier than anything you could ever buy!

Thanks Nuala - I'm certainly hoping so as it will have cost me more than a cheap fleece by the time I've finished ... however, I am enjoying doing it as it has been years (probably over 20!) since I've knitted and hoping I'll feel confident to try "something proper" once it's done.

Quick question though ...... I'm aiming for it to be a throw I can put round my shoulders when it's chilly - any idea how long I want it to be. It currently goes round my neck and nearly down to my wrists (which I would want at a minimum) but wondering if it should be a bit longer?

If anyone has anything similar, do you find it to long/short, does it tuck under your arms etc?

    TIA

Has anyone bought those little hot water bottles they have in the pound/99p shop? I could do with a couple of new ones and the little ones are ideal but I don't want to get them if they are leaky and rubbish.

I got 4 about 6 week's ago, no leak's to report and they seem to keep the heat well.hth.

  • Fayhare - I bought a two pack a couple of years ago & they are still going strong. I find them very useful to tuck inside a jumper when i am sat at the pc for a while.

I have bought wellies, coats, hats, gloves etc already.
I have plenty of fleecy throws etc for tv watching.
I need to tidy the garden ready for winter though. Thats on my list for this weekend.....fingers crossed the lovely weather doesn't lure me into lounging in the sun!
    When I grow up I want to be a M.S.E.!! :D
  • Rising where did you get that deal on the dog food please?
  • I really need to sit down soon and go through a list again. Besides still finding a new coat and boots for work (the coat is proving more troublesome than anticipated, as I mentioned on the last thread), I do need to check up on my cleaning and household things. I have a nagging feeling I'm missing something and as we go in to winter I get so caught up in work etc that things sneak up on me.

My break at work today was spent with colleagues who had noted the appearance of my hot water bottle and cold/flu provisions at work. They had found it hilarious but, with one about to go on extended medical leave and another on maternity leave, they have gradually been coming around to the idea. They now have internet orders for food, cleaning stuff and toileteries and, thanks to you all, know the best places to buy fleecy blankets, things to keep in the car and the like.

    Two questions:

    1) has anyone bought brushed cotton sheets from Tesco? Are they nice enough quality and do they wash ok?

    2) Lidl's offer on Cushelle is more expensive than the 2x 18 rolls for £5 of whichever brand was on offer in Poundstretcher (and possibly Home Bargains). I don't know how the roll length compares, has anyone bought both brands and can compare? We're on a septic tank and the plumbing doesn't like thick stuff like Andrex, and my DDs use unnecessarily massive quantities. I usually get the 9 for £1.99 in Tesco, Discount Brands.

Coming out of lurkdom to say that the 2 packs for £5 toilet rolls from poundstretcher are single ply and not very soft. Have to use twice as much so false economy in my opinion. I did buy the Cushelle from Lidl and it is quite thick so maybe not good for your plumbing. I usually use the Shades rolls from A**a unless the big brands are on special offer.

Can`t help with the sheets query, sorry.

I`ll go back and lurk again.

Thanks for this, I only really go to Lidl if there's a deal I really want to stock up with and I think onions are the only thing on this week's newsletter that caught my eye. Will get them at the market though.

Anyone buying dog (or other) food in bulk it's worth looking at Zooplus and GW Titmuss, go through Quidco for both these retailers. Could be free delivery depending on the amount.

My boy's on Skinners Duck & Rice - I usually just get at my local pet shop where it's £23/bag but as I can't get out and about I had a look around and came across this:

    http://www.medicanimal.com/product/~skinners-field-trial-duck-rice-15kg/~product_id=B20955

ETA: I have had deliveries from them before & they've come really quickly and well packaged (unlike some!)

If you add the code, it works out at £36 for 2 x 15kg bags - free delivery & they're also on Quidco so some cashback available too! :D HTH

  • Thank you to the kind person who mentioned tension rods for windows. I bought mine in Dunelm Mill, for my width of window (120cm) they were £4.95 each. I'm selling my house, so don't want to spend money on blinds I'm just going to leave behind. So bought the tension rods, and have doubled IKEA Polarvide throws over so that both fringed ends are at the bottom - looks very pretty. These particular windows don't face the street so it doesn't matter the view is blocked, and I bought white throws so some light is filtering through, even through 2 thicknesses of the fleece.

They can quickly be taken down should I have a house viewing, and put back up again afterwards. It's a good no-sew, no-drill solution!
If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

I got some last year and they are fine. I fill them when I get up in the morning and stick it on the dashboard of the car. Then when I'm ready to go, usually some of the thick ice that has developed inside the car overnight has melted. It's not nice scraping it off as you usually end up covered in it.

I was laughing last year at people saying not to buy ice scrapers and de-icer because you can just scrape it off with a credit card. I wish! Where I live here the car freezes inside and out and a credit card is just no good, well, a scraper is no good either most times. When we lived near Aviemore I remember the inside of the car freezing as we were driving along, we had to keep stopping to scrape it.
