    That wind is incredible!!!

Its nothing in comparison to what some of you are getting but we are just not used to seeing gusts of 50mph here in the south where I am... Its horrible. How you lot up north cope with even higher winds than that, I will never know. I can imagine that a scottish fence builder is a very different one to an english one :D Those winds kept me awake last night which is unusual for me - I can sleep thru most things! My shed's door has blown open and I cba to go and shut it as I will get soaked.

My fences are blowing back and forth like flags, and my huge buddleia has broken right off on the main trunk... at exactly the point I was intending to prune it, but never got around to :D Every cloud and all that :rotfl:

Its calmed just now, and think that might be us finished for now, I hope! Just typical that the schools go back tomorrow and I promised to take DDs to cinema today  Luckily they are sweet kids and they understand that its not worth going out in this weather altho naturally they are disappointed.... However, that said, I need to get money out for the plumber... and have just 2 cigarettes in the house :o so staying in ALL day is a bit unrealistic... Will keep tracking the weather - IF it really shows no sign of letting up, I will call the plumber to come tomorrow and give up smoking :p

    Keep safe everyone :A

Howling winds here in Edinburgh. Dogs got a short walk this morning and we avoided the older trees in the park as there are quite a few branches down.
My sis flies out of Aberdeen today, back down to Heathrow. Think flights are still on there. Many roads closed around with fallen trees.
DD is in Aviemore and hopes to get back tomorrow. Goodness knows why they went there as the forecasts were terrible for today!
DH has gone off for a 'proper' walk but I'm wrapped up and staying in, listening to meditation music and pottering.
    Keep safe all.

Beanrua, I hope that you enjoyed your soup :)

After the conditions a month ago and worry getting to and from work, it's lovely to be sitting here with a cup of tea and no stress. I hope that everyone is safe and relatively damage-free.

Rising, I agree with you. It seems like we are having a particularly stormy year and have been getting more severe weather in general. I've been thinking about it and, before last winter, don't remember ever having a snow day or school closure even when I was at school in the late 80s/early 90s - I'm not sure about the early 80s. Back in 1995 (I think), I can even remember working nightshift when we had a very cold snap in the December and not having a single problem with public transport or getting to and from work. Maybe I'm wrong or have been relatively lucky - I've never lived in the countryside or, apart from a couple of years abroad, outside the Glasgow area. Are we seeing more extremes of weather or are we all so much more health and safety conscious?

I remember when I was younger over here there seemed to be a permanent gale blowing all winter, more often than not so strong that you would be walking horizontally and taking one step forward and two back. It's been mild for the last few winters though (except last year). Now the winds are back it just seems like it's going back to normal to me!

I can feel the house moving with the strong gusts! It has been like this before ,but not for a long time, the last time I remember it was when Carlisle flooded.

wmf I had to drag one of our dogs outside and I have been really soft and my nine hens are in the back porch! They were hungry as their feeder was blowing around so I put them and the feeder in the porch.

frugal we don't have fences. We have dry stone walls as fences would never survive here. The neighbours all laughed though, when we put a shed up in the Summer. It is still here :) For now:o

Justamum, I feel the same as you. We are back to usual.

  • I kept my cats in last night although it was very calm outside but I had looked at the weather before I went to bed and decided to shut the door downstairs,( I live in a flat) I thought it was a bit strange that the cats were all sleeping in the hall (like they knew something) I woke up at 7.15 to hear this awful noise from the wind outside and I could hear the roof lifting, this is the West Coast of Scotland by the way,I got up and walked round the flat,so many noises it was incredible, awful noise from the fireplace which is blocked off, then I heard this strange rolling noise above me and I thought the ceiling was going to cave in! I stayed in the hall with the cats and waited about an hour for it to calm down down a bit,as soon as it started to get light I was looking out the window and I saw something on the grass below and as it got lighter I realised it was the chimney pot! I went outside about half an hour ago and looked at the roof, some slates missing one side and a tv aerial in the garden (never used) not been out the front yet where the chimney pot is,tried ringing housing assoc but they are all on holiday so can't report it yet. Still raining out there and I am hoping it isn't getting into the loft now. I was so scared when I got up,I live on my own which I hate when things happen! Cats are going out now, don't think they are very impressed with the weather,I still have to sort all the rubbish bins, they probably wont be here tomorrow anyway! I saw one of the school signs down on the road near me,probably some damage there too. Debating if I should go to the shops before it starts again? The weather here has been terrible the last couple of winters,I am used to southern England where we never got much severe weather,is this now going to be a regular thing I ask myself? My Sky box in the living room packed up before New Year, they are coming on Saturday,I hope it's not windy that day as the fault may be outside this time! Happy New Year to everyone.

shirleymarye I would have been terrified too. It can be so very dangerous if a chimney comes down. I hope you get your chimney and sky box sorted soon. We have just had a chimney fire and have had to turn off the boiler. Luckily DH is home today or I don't know what I would have done.

My family are all out in this weather today. And the hens are still in the porch :)

For others with power cuts - my power distributor had an excellent Twitter feed - I tweeted them to ask what was going on and practically got an instant reply. So, UK Power Networks certainly had their eye on the ball. We now have power back - thank goodness for mobile phones, eh?

I am putting my trust in the bbc weather forecast :D and put a 60 wash on earlier. Bright and windy at 11-12 so that should dry it.
Absolutely spot on kittie thanks for that - I got sheets and towels hung out for about 40 mins - after all the sleet and driving rain I was surprised that there was a break in it at all. Had to watch they didn't take off tho' with all the wind.
