Preparing for winter III

  • Preppers good evening

Long time no see. Just wanted to say thanks for whoever said put duvets under your bottom sheet. I've done this on our bed and DS2's and it is so much warmer (I have to chuck the hottie out after 30 minutes which is unheard of!) DS3 sleeps on fleece blankets anyhow and DS1 is hot enough on his memory foam mattress.

It is harder keeping the heat off all day with the kids home from school. DS3 did ask yesterday when we could have the heating on like normal again. I am wondering if I'm being a bit too mean with it as even with the fire and the AGA on it was really cold by 4pm.

Condensation is really bad this year, especially upstairs, I wonder if it has anything to do with us insulating the loft rafters. I know some people have humidifiers. Are they expensive to run and are they noisy?

Happy Christmas to you all, keep warm and safe.

I've not tried the duvets under the sheets yet, can't really with mine or DS2's beds as he still sometimes wets the bed & sometimes it's my bed he's in... What I have done is use an old cellular blanket under my waterproof mattress protector, and that does make a little bit of difference. I want to get DS1 a super warm & thick mattress topper (in the summer sales) as his mattress isn't as thick as mine, so I think it will make his bed more comfy as well as warmer.

If anyone is still wondering about how do use fleeces with curtains, this might help.
  • Just an update re: spare room.

I've bought a fleece blanket, hot water bottle this time one with a custom cover with 51% angel, 49% !!!!! which my sister would like lol and a cheap fan heater all from B and M in Dudley.

I've replaced the curtains with a thicker pair so it will keep out the draft.

My sister has even invested in one of those all in one blankets you can wear as she knew it would be cold in our house lol!

Well done! Sounds like they're going to have a cosy time with you :-)

It's maybe a bit late on in prepping now but I had to share my new socks with you all (not literally, you wouldn't all fit!), found them in the big garden centre where OH and I were buying a tree, they are Heat Holders and they are the warmest socks I've ever had the pleasure of putting my feet into. :j

Not cheap at £6.99 a pair but soooo worth it. I have always suffered with cold feet and my two-sock approach has been flagging of late (although that could be due to all the holes in my well used pairs).

The inside feels like cotton wool and warms you up instantly. I've worn them in shoes but they have a grippy pattern on the bottom so are good 'slipper socks' for indoors too. There were kids ones there too.

It's possible someone's already posted about them in a previous prepping thread but I can't remember seeing them mentioned.

My local garden centre has them, and there are plenty on eBay and, IIRC, Amazon. Knee length or ankle length, with or without grippy soles (I can't get my wellies on with the rubber slipper-sock type). Definitely the warmest socks I have ever worn, can be worn over a thin pair for extra insulation but I normally wear them alone. Lots of lovely colours too. Highly recommended for wellie wearers :)

:D Good morning preppers and a flying visit to thank you for all the posts about YaxTrax in the late summer ( was a regular reader at that time).

I'd never heard of them before but was inspired to get them for my elderly parents as they'd had a lot of trouble and some near-falls last winter and I was worried, esp about Mum, who has thinning bones.

They had their first use yesterday and were a great success; the parents are made-up and I am pleased too (and I also got some for myself and for a few other people).

So I wanted to nip in to say a

    :smileyhea BIG THANKYOU :smileyhea

    for doing what you do.

Quite possible, insulation may have blocked any vents or spaces to the outside. Ventilation is really necessary in any house and makes for a healthier house. House air should be changed between 0.5 and 1.5 whole changes per hour. Some houses have too many changes and are cold and draughty and others have too little and are in danger of damp and dangerous mould

Our local newsagents sells the heat holders socks - so I'm now sitting with cosy feet! :D
  • Been busy knitting these slippers: http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/maggieslippers.html because they're so quick and easy and I'm not much of a knitter. If you use a double strand of chunky wool they come up lovely and warm and OH loves his because I used QPR colours (well someone's got to like them, lol).
