Well we woke up to deep snow and its still coming, husband got up at 6 and it was very heavy then and it's still falling. had to go out and give the net roof of the chicken run a good "dunt" as it was sagging right down full of snow. Lovely to see a calm cool day with some real snow :D Will try and take pics when its light.

Oh share a photo on here, I so love snow, I hope we get some, although rest of those who live here don't, they are all hoping last two winters were a fluke.

I love the metrociel link someone posted a while back and looking at that you cant even see the UK inder the low pressure purple - it just looks appallling (this from one who understanding of weather extends to low pressure =bad high pressure=good) - frankly I m a bit scared by it all. I dont know what to do about my shed roof and now my drains (loo) are blocked and I dont have any drain rods (I have overflow from the inspection cover) and literally only £20 for me and the dogs til a week on Monday. I feel like my life is constantly like that line from Jaws '-just when you thought it was sae to go back in the water.....'
Any advive on drains would be appreciated!

ask your neighbours tugrin, lots of people have drain rods

I thought at first it was the loo and I was going to suggest something that worked for us in the last house ie a old fashioned mop, cut the stick short and wrap the head in a plastic carrier bag. It works brilliantly when you cannot get a plunger to fit your loo. Also caustic soda from an ironmongers but take care with that and don`t use it with the plunger

Back to drain rods, do ask. most people will help if they can. Just make sure that you keep screwing the correct way all the time or they can work loose

yes, re the weather, I am pretty scared as well. Its all ok when it is a theory that might happen but it has gone past that and I don`t think he is talking about a gentle fall of snow.

Tugrin are you able to lift the inspection cover outside to see if the drain is backed up?, when ours did this it was backed right up to the top and we ended up using a fully extended metal washing pole to get things moving.

If its just the loo try pouring bicarb and vinegar down it - plenty of it and that should help, failing that a plunger, if you don`t have one a mop will do the trick as long as the head is big enough to get the suction of a plunger, if not then wrap the mop head in an old towel to make it bigger.

  • Tugrin hope you get something sorted re the drains, sorry no advice to offer as I'm useless at stuff like that. I did a quick search online as there's some good DIY sites around and came up with these:

The are a few good DIY forums as well with loads of helpful people (who don't take the "whatnot" when I asked "dumb blonde" questions:

They managed to help me fix my central heating last year! HTH:)

Really odd here just now, the cars in the street are all covered with snow but there's hardly any lying on the ground?

Hope it stays that was as really need a trip out to a nearby town to get some bits for DM (she's even more rural than me) and it's around a 20 mile journey:eek:.

Then hoping to get to DMs tomorrow  will be the longest drive since my surgery so hoping the roads are OK......

Thank kittie and sunny - I will get inspection cover off -Im pretty sure the problem is there as I have had no success with the plunger. Will also get some caustic soda as its pretty near emergency time.
Obviously cant leave it like that anyway but with the approaching arctic snow it def. needs doing!
Really guys thanks for help - you are all becoming my 'turn to first friends'

  • It's all snowy here and so beautiful. I love the first day of snow when it's all white but after that I start feeling claustrophobic being stuck in the house. DH has had to go out to work so I've sent him off with the winter car box, a sleeping bag and food. He was laughing at me saying "If I crash I'll not sit in the car in a sleeping bag, I'll just walk to someone's house". Well better safe than sorry, I think. Once the snow clears I'll be doing my last proper stock up before Christmas and if Kitties weather is right I'll be sitting tight until about Feb!! Oh, and thanks Kittie for all the warnings, I for one appreciate it, and if the weathers wrong well at least we were prepared.

Its beautiful here in my village, the trees and bushes are all covered, off out to get a photo of the village green while the light is good. Just looking at my cat's footprints to see where she has headed. Off to Glasgow for the panto, sadly its raining through there.
  • Big snow dump down in Fife - I thought it was only forecast for NE Scotland? Certainly unexpected, I thought it would just be frosty when I looked out this morning!
