congrats on the new to you carpet!

have you considered just putting it on top of what is already there? or at least for winter? it would help keep your tootsies even warmer... just a thought ;)

just what I was going to suggest, another layer of insulation can't be bad and you can get the blue monstrosity up and dispose of it in the spring/longer days when these things seem easier to sort out (or is that just me?) ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Taking DDs to Disneyland in the very early hours of tomorrow morning so pray for some dry weather for me....we're there from park opening until 7pm so a long old day if it's raining.

Are you taking the highspeed train straight into Disney??
As its almost a 3 hour drive from the other end of the tunnel!!!
Have a great time and take a backpack with plenty of snax and drinks as it's soooooo expensive. Yayyyy for Cafe Mickey!!!:T[/QUOTE]

We're going on a coach through the tunnel....luckily we live about 5mins from the tunnel.....we did it last Christmas too, very magical (and yes the food is silly prices)

Power cuts are normal here aren't they (but in this day and age, should they be?) and I'm very glad of my little campervan so I can brew up. I also know the value of having different sources of heat/, light and hot water. The open fire can be used to cook on (though the van is easier) and heats me and the hot water. There's the oil heating and there's electricity. As long as they all don't die at once!!! I've decided after last year when things were really dire and the heating stopped working and no-one could deliver oil, logs or anything else, and I couldn't get out to work to earn any money anyway, that I'm not going to scrimp and contrary to what this site preaches, sod the credit cards!!!

Powercuts are also fairly frequent in my neck of the woods. Had one for 4+hrs on Wed night...naturally just as I'd dumped my shopping bags on the kitchen floor, collected the litter trays, moved a kitchen chair...so had a number of obstacles to hurdle in the pitch black as I groped my way to the torches on the kitchen windowsill. Perfect timing! :rotfl:

I lit lots of tea lights (had just replenished supplies after the weekend), and thought about getting my new camping stove out to make a cuppa, but it was SO much easier to pour a whisky and coke, and after that, the powercut really didn't bother me too much any more. Hmmm....

Holding a torch to read was a bit of a pain though, and not really a bright enough light, so am thinkng of treating myself to a hurricane or camping lamp this weekend - will need to research that at some point.

Re a posting I made earlier in the week, does anyone think it would be too dodgy to use an 8 yr old leccy blanket that hasn't been used for 6 yrs, and was only used a few times before that? It looks fine...I'm tempted to plug it in this weekend and see what happens...not actually use it until I've tested it. Ah, it'll be fine, I'm sure

Well, I'm home very early this afternoon as kitten has been visiting the vet for his "big op" (bless him). I have the BM on (part of an unexpected winter prep pressie from my friend and lugged all the way back on 3 trains from Cambridge), hm soup on the go, the fire is lit, the pusses are both settled -it's freezing cold outside, but we're comfy cosy inside. Bliss :p

Have a lovely weekend everyone. Wrap up warm, especially those in Scotland - snow showers forecast at various levels and awful northerly winds. Brrrrrr! :(

Confuzzled and Rosie - pure genius - why is my thinking so carp at the moment - is it the drugs (gabapenten not anything recreational!!) or is it age - cant tell anymore lol.
SOoooo much easier to do that and you are SO right about stuff like that being easier in the longer days, thank you for pointing it out, I really need the obvious stated just now so keep on with top hole advice please!
    Thats tomorrows little job then.

  • Brrrrrrrrrr it's a wee bit nippy out there!

Tugrin congrats on the carpet - a big Free*cycle fan here. I managed to get one for my wee spare room last year and it's not perfect but not bad!;)

I'd also suggest putting over the top of the existing one over the winter if it's "stable" and won't slide around too much (although it will probably be fine by the time the furniture is on top).

Honestly, the people that lived here before had no colour savviness (is that a word?) at all - barbie pink walls in the bedrooms ..... dark green walls in the lounge with a dark blue carpet (they put this into the spare bedroom when they sold the house) ... eugh!

Have just put the gas fire on in the lounge - should've put the heating on when I got in to stop me getting tooooooo cold but I was being a stooge so serves me right!;)

Was decidely chilly getting into bed last night & also wondering if I need to dig out the leccy blanket (not used for the past 2 winters but was new before that) - am I getting old ...... didn't used to feel the cold as much only a few years ago (and this house is a lot warmer than my last one!).

I think that i will depend on how its been stored and whether or not the wires have been scrunched up, if its been boxed and not squashed then it should be fine but if its just been folded and squashed then the wires may be damaged or have split and it would be too risky. I`d try it a few times before puting it on the bed, once on a worktop and then a few times on the sofa to make sure that i could trust it IYKWIM, good luck.

Heh! this made me chuckle, you should have seen this place when we moved in  Canary yellow and bright blue together with green, gold and white stripes:eek: Bright purple walls and a yellow carpet - need i go on lol. Thankfully we`ve got rid of most of it and touch wood the rest will be gone next year:D

Well i keep leaving myself notes to do things and then either forgetting or not having time, i`ll be lucky if the kitchen is sorted out for Christmas at this rate, the outside tap STILL needs insulating and i have a list an arms length:eek: Only another 6 days before i get a day off and can hopefully tackle some of the outstanding jobs.

Tugrin - Congrats on the carpet, definitely put it down over the old one at least until the weather improves.

  • Katkin, your poor wee DD :(

It didn’t feel all that cold this morning on the way to work but my wee side street was icy and so I only just managed the early train. Ice was even worse at my destination, although it just looked damp, and there were a few accidents when people stepped off the train. Somebody looked to have broken their ankle. I inched my way up the road to work with some colleagues and the only one who looked to be coping was a Canadian temp who was holding one of the others up! Same thing happens with the first proper ice every winter – so much for me, and for my local authority, being prepared!

I’ve been sneezing and coughing all day. I’m now sitting at my computer, beside a radiator, wrapped in three pairs of socks, warm slippers, PJs, dressing gown, fleecy blanket, hot water bottle and cup of tea and I’m still cold!
