    Hi Everyone!!

Gosh I have been reading this thread for about two weeks now trying to catch so I feel I know you all!! Thanks everyone for fabs tips!!

I have the following to add which is hopefully helpful! Last Nov we had a new combi boiler fitted and the fitter man who as well as fitting boilers was/is studying thero something or another- about heat loss/insulation etc etc and he said to us that you should never let you house tempreture fall below 12 degrees!!

He said it takes more energy to get the house back above 12 than to keep it there in the first place. Well due to us having a fancy and v complicated themostate thing (can you tell im not that technical?!) we set ours so our house never falls below 14 degress- now I know this sounds scary and expensive but it really worked and last winter even with the horrendous weather we had the house only dropped below 14 degrees twice in the middle of the night.

This is a 'fall back' tempreture and obviously we had it set higher at peak times of the day

Hope this makes sense- sorry to ramble on sooooooo much :o

Frugal- last winter I also brought a second hand rabbit fur coat OMG I LOVE IT!!!!!:D

I'm in Bristol too, my car read 9 degrees at 4pm this afternoon, very chilly and another one with a log fire burning. Bit of a novelty as we got our old fireplace up and running on Friday and burnt all the wood we had already lol

I've just had mine on for a couple of hours to test it.
Its never been on for so long I thought I'd better see it works ok :D.
To be honest its not been that cold to need it on but at least I know its fine for when I do.
House is a bit too hot now though.

Still no central heating on here, although we do have a fire going tonight but my youngest cat is very poorly so I've made him a cosy bed in front of the fire (he's got a nasty abcess that the vet opened up this morning so he's feeling very sorry for himself). The DDs complained that their rooms were chilly so they've layered up in pjs, socks and fleeces and are in the family room doing homework (next to the living room so they're egetting the benefit of the fire too)..... I shall make them a hot water bottle in a bit to warm their beds up and make them hot chocolate and jammy toast to keep them happy. (both teenage girls with hollow legs for toast and hot chocolate)

  • Our heating has been coming on - thermostat is set at moment at 18( we cannot get it to stay at a lower temp no matter how much we fiddle with it, it always reverts to 18 at certain times during the day, fun when its really, really cold as we have to go and put it up again) and temp obviously been going lower for it to come on. Through the night we had fog and thick frost - was pure white this morning till about 9am by then it was lovely and sunny but only lasted till 11am then went misty and temp dropped again and tonight frost already over the grass, roofs etc but at past few hours heat has actually stayed off and I have a window open about 3 ins in here but might pop it on for a short while as I want to have a bath and bathroom even though well insulated is rather cold ( two outside walls). Hubby said he had to scrap quite a bit of ice off the windscreen when he left for work at 6am, he only uses de-icer if he is either running late or it is just to thick for scraper to work. Looks as if the winter weather has reached us, now to see if it will stay.

Thanks for that ... my house has been under 12 deg pretty regularly the past couple of weeks. I finally gave in and put the heating on for a bit a couple of days ago (has been on now & then since) as the house was feeling really damp and the condensation was awful.

I might have to reset my programmer with a slightly higher temp .... it's set at a minimum of 7 just now. I find if it's much more than that it comes on practically every night!

The big problem I have with that is that the boilers in the kitchen - right under my bedroom and wakes me up every time it goes on & fires up:( mmmmm.

The max temperature here today was a bone chilling 4 deg . Why did I move back to Scotland? (shakes head and slopes off to turn the hot water up for a thawing out bath)
