Yes, it was interesting, dispelled some myths for me and confirmed what I'd always suspected that people really do not know what will happen so far in advance.
Am glad I'm preparing for whatever happens. If it isn't too bad, then that's good. If it is horrible, then I'm as ready as I can be.
My parents keep mentioning the winter of '63. Having now seen the TV clips, I understand why! Last winter was nothing in comparison, even though it was horrendous.

Ah bless, anyway. A hot water bottle isn't really a good substitute is it? Though possibly a tad less expensive :rotfl:

I just bunged mine in the SC with stock, cornflour, herbs, S&P and cooked it all day... Then picked off the bones and fat, and put it back in the gravy. (probably even better if roasted in the oven first, or browned in a pan)
It was the first time I had cooked it and I was really impressed by the lovely meat on it. Yummmmmy
What temps have you got over there Kmiller? In celsius if poss - don't understand FHave you had any snow at all?
Thanks Frugal--I will pick up some oxtails and try them. They sound delicious!
This morning it was 25F (-4C) on my way to work. I have not personally had any snow yet, but nearby towns with higher elevations have had a little. Of course it melts as soon as the sun hits it. We missed the big snowstorm in October. It will be here soon enough though! I have the woodstove blazing away as we speak. Takes the damp chill away. Our daytime temps run between 7 and 13C.0 -
LavenderBees wrote: »Yep, that's just about the way of it. There'd been a "run" on the farm shop by the time I got there so I only had one piece of oxtail (from the freezer), and bought a small piece of gorgeous shin beef (£1.50). I rolled the meat in seasoned flour, and browned them in the frying pan. I also had a small bag of casserole veges in the freezer so bunged them in the slow cooker, too. Plenty of beef stock (I just used a couple of cubes), a generous glug of red wine, and a handful of pearl barley to thicken it. The barley and the glutinous meat did the job of thickening the gravy too much, though, and I could literally stand the spoon up in it! so I added even more water. As Frugal says, let it cool, dig out the meat bits to shred it. Remove the fat (the kitten loved the fat and a bit of gravy for his breakfast). I also whizz the gravy with a hand blender. I've got 6 huge portions of the loveliest, meatiest tasting soup for lunches (will have to freeze some), and had some for breakfast too :rotfl:
If you like meaty dishes (with the added bonus of using hardly any meat), well recommended as a winter warmer :T
If I were a REAL pig, I might even add dumplings...yum...now there's a thought....
Mmmm-- l love beef and barley soup. I must make this! Trouble is, I have no freezer space left:( Guess it will have to be a small batch.0 -

Sunnyday, as you live in Yorkshire you could get a free outside tap insulator. Go to Yorkshire water website and follow the link. Mine arrived this week, so hopefully the offer is still on.
Pollys
Thanks Pollys :A
I went on there a while ago and ordered the pipe insulation but it hasn`t shown up yet, i wasn`t quick enough to get the tap cover though - they had long gone by the time i saw the offer.
Fingers crossed that the insulation turns up but i`m starting to feel doubtful lol
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0
