Hi Prepare - and have you used the spray-on black ice stuff before. I was thinking of getting some for the mornings as I have to leave before light and had quite a few frights last winter.

Does anybody have any tips on how to make a room less moist? I get condensation on my windows every morning, and just found a throw pillow that'd fallen into the gap between my bed and the wall (the north facing external wall) and it was completely mouldy

It's rented accomodation..so nothing permanent.. and I have been opening the windows in the morning.. to try and get rid of the condensation (we also don't have the heating on overnight.. just for 2 hours in the evening and early morning on the lowest setting)

    Ugh..really gross :(

    edit: also preferably cheap..naturally :p

Don't forget to try damp traps, can be found in pound shops etc, I used them in my bathroom and kitchen which are not very big rooms, very effective for smaller spaces/rooms.

  • FRUGAL - I bought the Traction Tracks Wheel Grips For Snow Mud Grass Sand from Amazon £16.68 but has free shipping. I looked all over the internet for these and followed up recommendations from other sites about these and felt these were the best for the price as its mud very often more than snow hubby has to deal with so these deal that although one year we did get stuck in sand but that's another story :)

TURGIN As to the Tyre Grip Black Ice Protection no not used it before but again not just read the Amazon responses checked around the internet and overall people seemed pleased with it and does seem to help. It is £20 basically including pp, you can view a video about it - it is a commercial at

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHaH3e3Qze0

I have seen it on-line for £18.90 but as never bought from the company before stuck to Amazon as I so far have always had good response to any problems. They say it does up to 20 applications so just ordered one can, if hubby find it helpful and we need more will buy it, but as yet rain rather than ice a problem - torrential rain out there but not cold.

    Hope this helps

Thanks toottifrootti we have a couple of camping/outdoorsy places so will try them & wilko in next few days. Was in B&Q & asked there but they only have battery operated ones, not one wind up torch!

Don't have Asda here but when in B&Q checked theirs out. Had a nice robust one with metal strip on leading edge but was sooo big thought I might struggle with it but if anyone needs a really robust one (& has someone strapping to push it) I'd recommend these as they look like they will last well. They were £12 and a few pence. They did have a smaller one but it was part of a set with a broom & some other implement but it didn't look very robust, I already have several brooms & it was £15 odd for the set. In the end got one from local diy/ironmongers place, was £7.99. Doesn't look really strong but just the right size (not too big or small!) When I first asked the asssistant he brought out a ridiculously small one (snow shovel! ;)) and I told him I thought it was rubbish & would break someone's back if they tried to use it (was like a large rounded child's sand spade). He burst out laughing & said it was a small version for keeping in cars in case you got stuck :o. These were £4.99 if anyone needs one! Still think they'd break your back but if space is an issue in the car they'd be ideal I suppose.

Was so excited with purchase of snuggly flannelette bed sets for mine & DS bed totally forgot to look for torches in town (& it was on the list!). These were quite expensive £34.99 for king size & £32.99 for double but I'm justifying it as an investment as will be used for a long time... Typical, I'm trying to prepare for winter, spent LOTS of money & it was 16.5 degrees here today... Also bought 2 door curtains (one for front & back). Thought these were good value at £17.99 each as they are a kind of chenille type material so nice & thick & also thermal lined. Doubt could get material & thermal lining for that & can't sew for toffee. It took me years to live it down when the hem on my skirt came down at work after I refused the offer of a needle & thread & stuck it up with sellotape til could get home & used wonderweb (LOVE it). Nearly as bad as the time I stapled my trouser hem until I could do the same with those...

I'll shut up now as I'm rambling on. Hope some of this info is useful to someone. Oh, by the way, the cosy sheets & door curtains are from Dunelm. Looked at cheaper versions in shops in town but quality was poorer so wouldn't last as long & saving wasn't that great really.

Alas not no toyboys - none would take an auldie like me on.

Uphill battle with him as he is the type of wait and see and then if needed buy it, and then wonders why the shelves are empty! Hence although I do not drive any more me making sure everything is done for the car as well as the house. Think I will have to go out to said car myself and put in the winter screenwash as its still sitting in the hall unused, he will wait till it freezes then come home moaning how his screen wash bottle was frozen.......I listen to the moans then take steps to stop them in future, mind you when I have done that he is always grateful and says so when he has to use something he thought was a waste of money at the time.

I think now I have sorted the car out fully for winter, unless its really bad we should not need winter tires or chains so those I cannot justify buying.

Just got to get that door curtain up over front door again - it needs ironing and I loathe ironing hence it not been done yet.

Oh my goodness - I am not sure if I mentioned my rabbit fur coat ;) ( :D ) but I thought tonight would be the perfect opportunity to try it out when I took the DDs round to our neighbours trick or treating... Well, I feel like I have been BBQ'd!!! I am so hot I am going to have to go and have a shower to cool down!!!

That is definately going back in the wardrobe until the weather gets baltic!!!

And.... I cut up a load of wood earlier for my new fire :D and its 18c in here - the house has held its heat from the fire Saturday!!!! I know that is a good thing, but I love my new fire so much I want to light one!!!
  • Thanks everyone for the advice - will look into getting one. Might also get a damp trap for the bathroom - when we moved in the walls were covered in mildew (and it's painted in water based paint so all comes off when you give the walls a scrub down) so hopefully that'd help prevent that :)

    weather warning just received

extreme cold 27th november to 28th december.

It is best to be completely organized before then. I am personally not arranging any christmas visits as we had to cancel everything last year and we are getting all presents out in the next couple of weeks. I know they will be appreciated as the adults are getting slankets, bought half price a year ago
