Ok Prepare - thats really comprehensive although I've forgotten ow to make a hay box. I would never usually buy tinned potatoes or peas but will just in case the worst happens. I only have 1 camping gas stove but I guess I could use the candle cooker to keep things warm?? as well as the 1 large vacuum flask I have.

My son says that n the event of world meltdown you have to guard everything you've got because people will just come and take! He feels that society has really crumbled already and its everyone for hmself. Sounds like those folk who turned up on your doorstep already have that philosophy How can it be OK to ask someone for something and NOT THINK OF REPLACING IT!!!!!! but Im the same age as as you so its obviously somthing that has become acceptable in recent years. I was going to say its a young person thing but I dont want to insult our younger members. Its just plain old selfishness which knows no ag limits.

  • Hay Box literally a cardboard box filled with dry hay - you can buy it at any pet supply place or garden centre. So you can keep the hay in the plastic it usually comes wrapped in or put it in a cardboard box and seal - to make sure it doesn't accidently get opened and you have hay all over the place, its amazing how far and how much hay is when lying on the floor :) I got my current lot with plants, they are delivered packed in it, so have just kept it in the box in greenhouse to dry out - which reminds me should check its dry now and move it out of there.

Yes if you make a few candle cookers no reason why they should not keep things warm - maybe have some for cooking, with more candles then some with just one or two candles to keep food warm. I have a few stay warm trivits, I picked them up in charity shops. They are cast iron and have place in middle for candle,

Most tinned vegetables can be cooked in the water they are in, as said very handy if there is a power cut - might not be in your area, but if its somewhere along the route which water comes along there are usually some pumps involved somewhere and they can go off and leave you with no water. I know water pressure usually moves the water but am sure I read electric pumps are used as well. Also could be a bad storm on the lake your water comes from ( happened to us and we are many, many miles from it, ok happened in summer not winter but possible) and mud etc., from bottom is mixed with water so its undrinkable, unusable even if you filter it, or so cold pipes freeze or just plain old water burst.

Sainsurys do large tins of potatoes at the moment for 20p - their own basics brand and very nice potatoes in them, just different sizes not uniform in the tins and tins could be used to make a candle stove for a small pan - just pierce side with a few holes for air. When I say large I do not mean giant, just a bit bigger than ordinary tins.

Remember having some tins in means if all else fails and so long as you ensure you have a can opener that does not run on electric you can eat things cold as they are already cooked.

That is a brilliant site, thank you.

I have a reprieve, dentist called to change appointment to next week as she in inundated with people needing emergency appointments this morning - to many sticky sweets last night me thinks.

Good in a way as just had an email to say snow shovel will be delivered between noon and 12.30pm and I would have been at dentist then.

Got to move myself, I want to check out how many batteries we have - mine all sit in an old fashioned wicker shopping basket, the curved kind with a handle, so easy to find, but not sure what exactly I have in it, could be lots of AA's and not many AAA's or Cs or Ds. Also want to check what takes those flat silver ones to buy more of them and of course the CH thermostat:eek:

  • This was posted on the grabbit board but I have copied it to here as might come in handy for some, I have bought a couple one to keep my emergency supplies in torch, candles, matches, wind up radio etc in and one as my tool box is over flowing. At moment everything is in a carrier bag but does tend to get moved a box like this will not

I completely agree with that. While it's nice to look out for others you have to take care of yourself and your own family first. If some major disaster did occur I think the worst possible place to be is around other people. You only have to look at what happened in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to realise that society can break down very quickly.

Hopefully none of us will ever experience anything like that. I just feel these days you have to be careful who you trust as people seem to be more than willing to take advantage.

    weather warning just received

extreme cold 27th november to 28th december.

It is best to be completely organized before then. I am personally not arranging any christmas visits as we had to cancel everything last year and we are getting all presents out in the next couple of weeks. I know they will be appreciated as the adults are getting slankets, bought half price a year ago

    hi

But on the positive side, during last year's dreadful weather, there was real camaraderie in my village - neighbours helping neighbours - pushing cars off the road (took 5 kindly people to get mine into a snow drift...it's a long story, but I can't leave my car on a blind bend on the main road, and yet I couldn't get my car off the main road...too much of the white stuff), snow shovelling (one neighbour came out to help me dig out my car at 5.30am!), feeding each other, checking everyone was ok. Made me feel proud to be part of such a community that pulled together. Sometimes adversity brings out the best in people rather than the worst.:A

Re Christmas - I think I'd just have a snack, and have Christmas another day :)

  • Hi all,

Finally got round to 'bubble glazing' and did the whole conservatory. BUT the stuff I put on the roof has fallen down already (we just used sticky tape) and I was wondering whether anyone has done this more sucessfully?? I used water mist on the windows, but I'm assuming that this wont work for the roof?

    Thank you!
