hi all, i've been really busy and having a few things to deal with so sorry for not posting.

ASDA had rubber backed mats with stripes of rubber and coir matting on the top, for 2.00!! :) so i got one for front and one for back :)

BIG NEWS!! the men to fit the wood buring stove are here today! they rang last thing yesterday as they had a cancellation! :) it did mean one hell of an argument with the OH as he still went to the gym last night despite needing to move furniture ect but it's all done now. wont get the stove today, as need a new lintel and raising and hearth laid, and plastering but it's a good start :) fingers crossed it goes smoothly.

Ooh, I am so jealous. Ours is booked in for the 10th November but they will contact me if they have a cancellation. I'm praying they do as the stove is sat in the hall-lol Would love to see some pictures when it's done or even of the work in progress:)

I have never stashed water until a few months ago when I was reading the T thread - I realised that anything could happen to leave us with no water - I could feed the street for a week in an emergency though :rotfl: (we would have had to drink the water from tins of kidney beans and the like  :rotfl: YUK!)

So, I now have 6 2litre bottles of water in the shed in case of emergencies - once the bad weather arrives, one will be brought into the house so there will always be one unfrozen one :)

May I make a suggestion on the water front - living somewhere where we go through spells of having frequent cuts, I've unfortunately got a lot of experience:(

Put some away for flushing toilets - refilling used pop bottles with tap water is best (as you can't get them confused with "proper" water) I keep a stash in the garage.

Also, people with certain medical conditions can be added to the water companies "essential users" list which should mean you get some delivered immediately if there's a cut.

In reality, this service is pretty poor - whenever I've called on it, I've been given 1 or 2 bottles (which wouldn't even fill a cistern once!) at best. Also, when you ring, you usually get the "it'll be a couple of hours so don't worry" speak... the last one we had went on for over 57 hours - and I only got my "priority" water 2 hours before it was turned back on!

Oh peeps! - its the last Friday before the tyranny of the clocks going back ..... I feel positively overwhelmed this year. Im sitting looking at the rapidly darkening sky from the sitting room window and it's only 6pm which means it will be like this at 5!! Maybe its because Im at home this year and have been watching the days more closely.
We have lots of water cuts here so I learned almost as soon as I moved here to keep the kettle filled at the very least. Water butt water does for the loo but having been without a cup of tea all day you realise to keep a 2 litre bottle in store.
I have ordered 3 yankee wax tarts form ebay - much cheaper than from the garden centre so thats something to look forward to I suppose.

I think I got a bit too carried away filling the freezer for winter. I may have accidentally forgotten to leave a little space when I crammed yet more soup portions in freezer bags in there the other day and now I can't get two of the drawers opened!

There are also three portions left in my fridge, and I gave three portions of it to my mum. I have no idea how I managed to make so much soup in what isn't a huge pot!

We have a Yankee Candle shop in the town where we live. I have never seen it before, it is tucked away on a street I don't usually go down. The lady was lovely. I bought another wax tart and a stick for the car, it can get smelly in winter transporting 3 DS's and a DD to rugby/football games. Looked for more brushed cotton sheets today but didn't find any, will continue visiting local dept. store to check if they have more in stock - there were some pink ones, not sure if DS's would go with that. Me and DH might have to though - he won't mind, as long as he is warm and like he says "The colour doesn't matter when your asleep"

Have a lovely evening everyone - I am feeling slightly jealous of those with real fires/stoves. There is one on my wish list.

Aye, I often have to use a screwdriver and heavy hammer at some point with my freezer food. Funny how it always fits IN ok!:undecided

Am currently working my way through my own freezer in an attempt to defrost it and refill it with scrumptious things. What's the betting the snow starts the day before I manage to refill it? :rotfl:

I won't be :rotfl: if that happens...but have spent months reading your tips and just wanted to use the smilie :rotfl:I think I might have only read parts 2 and 3, it just feels like all 3

My endeavours at keeping the house warm without using heating are really paying off at the moment, thanks to all your tips . It was just on freezing here this morning, but I was toasty warm when I got out of my double duvet cocoon - one on top, one underneath - would never have thought of that without you guys.:j.

Still no heating on...and how weird is this for Northumberland at this time of year, my plants are growing again and re-flowering!! :o

This is something I picked up from the thread. Just sorted DS3's bed as yet (coldest room) still got the others to do, but he says it is really warm and he really loves the brushed cotton sheet and pillowcase.
