  • Well, I've done two pairs of curtains on my new sewing machine...the hems are a little "freestyle" but I didn't quite appreciate how slippery thick satin is  They now finish at the windowsill. I loooooved the long sweeping fabric, but with the radiators under the window it would be no good for heat.

I've got two fruit bushes planted out for next year, and some soup going in the slow cooker. I was hoping to batch cook and freeze but I could see a lot of it vanishing today :o

I'm still on the summer duvet and without heating on :T

Spikyhedgehog, just wanted to say that I totally sympathise with the stress of having a bedwetter, and my heart goes out to your little one.

My 10 year old DS has been dry for 2 years now - thank god - but it took a lot of hard work and love - he is a selective mute and has social anxiety disorder.

Unfortunately he still soils and has to change twice a day - he has been constipated so many times that he's lost sensation. :(

All I can suggest is that you get a couple of plastic mattress covers, lots of cheap sheets and make good use of your radiators. :)

(Sorry for the thread hijack...I'll doing some winter car maintenance next week.)

Lady bugs! I wonder if this could be a sign of bad weather coming on?

    1. I was bringing the line drying in and taking the wet load out when I noticed the back of the house was literally moving in the sun, on closer inspection I called my OH out, as we watched literally hundreds of lady bugs off all shapes and sizes and of all colours trying to find somewhere to curl up for the winter, and it was amazing to see. I snapped a few photo’s but it doesn’t really come across as it was the movement that was amazing.

I saw a lot of ladybirds today too :j Not as many as you but more than usual. I think you may be right, they are looking for somewhere to hibernate - doing their own winter preps :D

Purple kitten I was listening to BBC Surrey on the radio this morning and lots of people have been asking about the ladybirds too. I think I will have to google if there is an old wives tale or something?

That's really nice of your mum, she is thinking how best to help you, those are gifts that keep on giving.

My mum does things like this too, there is no way to return the gift really, she has everything she needs.

I just try to spend time with her, she can't buy that.

I think you're right, I try to do that and she loves being involved with my kids so she has DD (11) for tea one night a week.

  • Q for those with little ones ... what sort of age would you introduce hot chocolate/hot milk/ovaltine etc?
I thought it would be nice for dear dd to have a warm drink before bed (and hoping it might calm her down, I swear 6.30 she gets a new lease of life!)

If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

Well, preparing for Winter may be easier if I manage to secure the flat I looked at a couple of days ago, have put a holding deposit down and just crossing fingers that credit checks go through alright (I have to ring Barclaycard tomorrow and shout at them as a mistake they made a couple of years ago is still on my credit report-grrrr).

The flat is newly double glazed (hurray) and is the 1st floor of a converted house. It's lovely and really, really hoping to get it. The rooms are quite big, but the laminate flooring is clearly done well, it has a far newer heating system then my current place, so that will help (yay for a thermostat!).

If all goes well, I'll be moving in a couple of weeks. The biggest downside is that the kitchen is smaller and I won't have a larder any more so will have to think about buying 20 tins of tomatoes because they are on offer. Also, the fridge freezer only has a small freezer section, but there may be room for my little freezer in the living room...will have to wait and see. I'm so used to be able to freeze soups and stews I don't know what I'd do without that option
I know its off topic but I just wanted to wish Toonie the very best of good luck for the flat she is after. It will be great to have your own place and be able to move on - big bonus on the double glazing and I am sure with a little thought and female ingenuity you will over come the storage and freezer problems - smaller places are easier to heat so smaller bills:T- what about putting the freezer in the bedroom or the hallway-with a pretty cloth over it you could use it as a table or something? and you can store your tins under the bed - on top of cupboards - single tins fit in lots of places:rotfl:will be keeping everything crossed foryou.

I cant wait to get back to my winter preps next week - not at home at the moment and feeling frustrated at not being able to get stuff done:rotfl: oh how sad am I:rotfl:

    take care all

Can anyone recommend a good pair of snow boots with excellent grip. Can't really afford to spend anymore than £30. I need something waterproof, not wellies as my feet get soooo cold in them after being out in the snow/ice for hours on end. Don't want anything with furry bits on the outside as my bosses may question me about not wearing my official (not waterproof/warm) footwear, also not practical and would'nt last 5 mins.

I have'nt noticed any ladybirds today but I remember last year or maybe it was previous year, 100's maybe 1000's trying to gain entry to peoples houses through there letterboxes. Everytime I lifted the letterbox flap up they would all drop out. Also remember them not being the usual native ladybirds but the harlequin ones.
