The Service Pack could be the problem. Don't hold me to it though. Connect to Ethernet, update and then try again.

Also, if using the Edimax software, make sure that the default is not Wireless 'N' only and make sure that there is no tick in the 'Radio Off' tick box.

Have connected it to the earthnet but will not do any updates, tried to update the sp1 to sp2 but will not let me beacuse its a 64bit and not a 32bit. also tried to down load microsoft security essentals but ie is also out of date tried to updat that to ie8 still no joy there either, i think using the restore disc has taken it back to far out of date it now running in 2003

You have Windows XP 64 bit?? Are you sure?

Would you prefer to run a completely clean install with XP SP3 32bit?

What is the full model description of the machine?

that will be the problem then (you are trying to install a 32bit driver on a 64bit system). Unless you can find a 64bit XP driver (NOT a vista/Windows 7 64bit driver) then you are out of luck unless you want to do a clean install of XP 32 bit.

XP 64bit never had much support in terms of drivers (and it didn't run very well on a few machines I tried it on).

Windows update (Start > all programs > windows update) should allow you to install all the updates available for the 64bit version of XP. SP2 is also the last service pack for the 64bit XP.

thanks have already done that but no updates as yet was exspecting to be inandated with upades
