Memory upgrade for PC

Hi I'm considering a memory upgrade for my desktop pc. It's over 4 years old, and over the years after putting various programmes on it I keep getting messages saying the virtual memory is low. Firstly is it worth upgrading the memory from the installed 256mb to 512mb.

The settings are as follows,
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

System Manufacturer Packard Bell NEC
System Model 00000000000000000000000
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~2191 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 3.0B, 02/11/2002
SMBIOS Version 2.3
Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
Locale United Kingdom
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)"

Time Zone GMT Standard Time
Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 11.73 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 466.30 MB

I have some knowledge of pc's however wouldn't know exactly which type of memory to buy, I've checked ebay and various pc stores, and notice there are plenty different types of memory.

Could someone please advise whether this would be worth doing and if it is a plug and play type. ( I have installed hard drive and dvd rw to this pc so have some knowledge.

Well there are cheaper places than crucial but I will say their RAM is very good no cheapy rubbish and their returns service is top notch and they will refund the postage if asked, What PC make and model do you have?

As you will have to make sure that you can have more ram try the crucial site for help http://www.crucial.com/uk/ try the crucial memory tool if no good youll have to download PCWizard (click here and download will start) to find out what ram youll need and if any spare slots are available and the make and model of your motherboard just to make sure how much ram you can fit.

Direct links to .exe files are not allowed on the forum.

Ive read through the forum rules and cant see anything about exe files unless I missed it?

I placed that exe because some people find it hard with no instructions to find where exactly to download it on the PCWizard website.
