Is this normal when porting a mobile number?

  • I have taken both sims out & taken out the batteries, waited half an hour then turned back on, but still they both have the same number

Its only a remote possibility that you will mess things up by making test calls/texts but you can cause a short delay by using things. (For example, you can't change the routing when a call is in progress) Its just advice given if you want to be ultra cautious.

What should happen is that both SIMs go off, a short time later the new SIM will come back on and when all services are working you will receive a text to say the port has completed and you are ready to go. Sometimes it takes longer and of you haven't received the text by the end of the working day. I would call to find out.

Thank you - it seems logical that you'd be told not to use it, but I honestly wasn't (as I keep saying I was sent a text telling me to use up the minutes).

What I will do then is to switch off both phones, then wait a while, hopefully later it will work
  • Fair enough - but I WASN'T told this, just to use up my minutes, and that it would take about 24hrs - I'd have to use the sim to use the remaining minutes...

Well then I'd say just wait out the 24 hours and see what happens. If the Orange SIM stops working and your Virgin SIM keeps your old number than it's all hunky dory, otherwise you'll have to phone Virgin and see what the deal is.
You must be really special then.

That's what my mummy tells me
  • It takes a matter of seconds to amend the routings to the gaining operators prefix. Using your mobile shouldn't case any issues whatsoever.

There's no need for that. Just because you aren't aware of something doesn't make it wrong. See my previous post for why you MIGHT cause a short delay and why it occasionally happens that ports don't complete.
  • Thank you bigdave196, I wasn't trying to be nasty earlier, just panicked when you said it would muck it up, when no one had told me this.. and nothing goes right for me lol :D

    There's a difference between shouldn't and can't.

    Give it a rest.

I work in Number Portability. I've ported my own numbers plenty of times, and have never been told that I can't (or shouldn't) use my phone at a certain time.

I'm having similar problems porting my son's number from Virgin to Giffgaff.

The port was supposed to happen yesterday and at some point the Giffgaff SIM changed its number to the number being ported and can make calls and send texts. The Virgin SIM is in a different handset and is the one receiving calls and texts.

I have contacted Giffgaff who said to remove the battery and SIM - I texted this to my son who did this in his lunchtime and now I can't contact him at all - if I call his number I appear to get the Virgin answerphone telling me the number is unavailable.

Currently waiting for Giffgaff to tell me what to do next.

I have ported at least seven times and can honestly say that , in my experience, it has been the norm for some functions to start working on the new network while there was still some useage on the old network.

Once the old network completely stopped functioning the new network was 100% functional within 30 mins.

I think things have improved in recent years however on one port years ago the old network stopped all functionality at 9am and the new network didn't start to function until 8pm.

On my last switch (voda to 3) it was almost instant.
