Seems you didn't get the sympathetic response you were hoping for but you had enough ammo without getting into the colour thing. Its fair to say that not many of the people who replied have ever worked in the chilled/fresh food business. Going into a freezer room from a warm environment is a health hazard even with protective clothing .Workers that prepare the chilled meals have permanent flu & accept it as a occupational hazard.I drove a fridge truck for years & often caught flu for going in the back of the trailer on plus zero % on a Summers day & had to book into a hotel to recuperate in a foreign country -10 days once in Switzerland .Below zero I would open the doors of the trailer & stand back to let the experts take control or its a dose of pneumonia. The other thing is lifting stock. There is a skill to it ,even using mechanical lifters, that even with training a young girl would find hard to master without doing damage to the spine etc.Watch the experienced hands, they either use a machine or if its handball they drop the packages down onto the pallet & hold them in their hands only for seconds.I can imagine a teen newby cradling these weighty items & struggling to place them correctly ,putting immense strain on the back.Looks to me as tho M+S employed a teenager to do a mans job?
You don't need to be a race victim to suffer permanent damage to your body playing around in cold stores -V.dangerous for amateurs.0 -
What is the point of dragging up a thread from over a year ago? I know you haven't posted much on the forums but you need to understand that commenting on ancient history is a waste of everybody's time.0

And drags up past history for the OP!If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

Lol. Flu is a virus which is has to be transmitted from an infected person, usually by coughing and sneezes and by poor hygiene (hand washing) and has absolutely nothing to do with working in cold environments.
If they had actual flu then they wouldn't be able to work, it is not just a severe cold, it is debilitating (even fatal in some cases).
The same can be said for pneumonia, it cannot be caught from going from a warm area to a cold one.0 -
Maybe they just didn't like you?
You maybe as suggested should have offered an alternative cake?
Lots or reasons why people don't get jobs just very odd people bring up race or colour all the time when they do not get a job. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
OP you state the customer base and the location of the store to be the reason you didn't get the job, isn't that racial stereotyping in itself aren't those comments racist?
If racism did exist in this case and not just your mind, I think you have a persecution complex and jump to the easiest excuse as the reason you didn't get the job. Maybe you just weren't the candidate they were looking for.0 -

I suggest you visit a chilled food packing plant & spend 10 minutes in the staff canteen - they all have flu & so will you if you go messing around in refrigerated rooms. Scientific theories are great stuff but real live experience will give the true picture.LOL0 -

I hate to carry an old thread on but seriously....you are talking utter b0llocks. My husband works in a warehouse with a freezer operating at -25. He often spends hours in there - and has never had so much as a cold in two years. This is in addition to loading and unloading frozen containers.
