does pond bother anyone?

Hi All,

another post to ask for advice. My hubby starts ignoring me now. :D

there's one house we viewed has a pond in the neighbour's garden.
it normally doesn't bother me, however, thinking about mosquitos flying around in the summer.. can be a put-off. also, there's water dripping sound which can be loud and clear at night!. does that sound ever stop?

anyone could advice how it's like in reality ?

Thanks

I doubt many people would be put off a house they like because of a neighbour's pond. Although, if the dripping was very noticeable it would put me off, but that kind of thing drives me mental (can't even bare a ticking clock at night).
  • i think you would soon get used to any wildlife or 'water' sounds. is the pond close to your prospective new house...i'd be thinking more along the lines of possible flooding! Ofcourse, depending on the size of the pond (is it a dinky fish pond or a large duck pond?) Does it have some sort of overflow system to cope when we have heavy rainfall?

We have a pond of our own with a water fall in a front garden, and a natural spring which runs into a stream outside our back door (original water supply for the house). We sleep 24/7 365 (yes even when there is snow on the ground!) with our bedroom window open, and the water noise is never a distrubance - infact its quite soothing! Are you going to ban heavy rain and hailstorms when you finally move into a new house? What about having every house in the street put their dogs to sleep so they don't bark at night? Get the dustmen to wear carpet slippers and stop traffic driving up the street between the hours of 10pm and 7am? There are far more intrusive noises that a little trickling water - why do they sell mood music CD's with that very sound included on them? It may be loud to start with, but your brain mutes it out in a very short time!

As for midges/mosquitoes etc, I we have never had a problem since we built our pond 15 years ago!

I think you would have far more important things to worry about than a neighbour's pond!

    What on earth!

Tell the neighbour to do the right thing and concrete over his garden like all sensible people.

Water should be captured on the roof and concrete patio and channelled immediately into drains so it cannot be see or heard.

Don't tell me this anti-social neighbour has trees in his garden too! Please? Next thing you'll know there'll be birds sitting in the trees, making singing noises and suchlike.

Some people are just SOOoo selfish!

If the only thing the neighbours do is have a pond which is not quite to your personal taste, you're lucky!!
  • well. funny enough, i sleep much better with the traffic noise!.
the pond's small...don't think there will be any flooding problems. I was put off from buying a property because the neighbour has about 6 cats + 2 dogs.

.... does that pond makes noise all the time, or there'll be mechanism to turn on and off?

Even if they could turn it off, are you going to go 'round and ask them? To be honest you seem to have a very long list of requirements for your prospective new home and some of them are frankly
Do you hold formal interviews for the neighbours either side of any place you view, to see if they fit the bill?

Even if the neighbours didn't have a pond or pets when you move in, if they later acquired some, there is little you can do about it. Sadly, although neighbours can be a problem in many ways, they are not going to ask your permission to buy a dog or cat, dig a new pond, or have babies!
  • What's the FTB's version of say a Bridezilla?

No wonder your husband is ignoring you. Start looking at decorating magazines, country home, ideal home etc - that'll keep you occupied till you move in :rotfl:

I was referring to the selfish neighbour with his pond and his trees and his birds singing and all.

    Not you gemma dear!
