Will the iphone 5 bring down prices

of other phones/contracts? I'm after a BB Torch 9800, not the latest must have handset but still a fair whack to buy sim free and can't find it under twenty five ish quid over 24 months on contract. Just wondering whether the rush to have the latest iphone will work in my favour if I can be patient a couple of weeks.

There isn't an iphone 5 as yet, and like it or not , just like you, not everyone or even the majority will be after one, I doubt a relase of any apple product will force down the price of other brands, as they all have their respective market.
  • Well that's kinda funny really being that when apple come out with new products demand can often outstrip supply (clever marketing if nothing else). Now, whilst I accept that there is a core fan base, so to speak, I'd have thought many more would have been caught up in the hype thus creating some form of negative impact on other manufacturers. Oh well.....

You would be surprised how many folk are not lost sheep , those that want one and can afford one , will get one, then there are those that can afford one, but don't want one as the devices do not suit their needs, then there are those that get wrapped up in the hype ,can't afford it and sign up to contracts that they can barely afford or their current handset is due for an insurance claim just as a new device is launched :o
The new device may not differ to much from the well publicised rumours on the spec, I understand a press release is due on 4.10.11 if that is any good to you?

No it won't drop the price of other manufacturers phones. It will drop the price of the iPhone 3GS and when there is sufficient supply of the iPhone 5 then the iPhone 4 will drop.

Not iPhone by itself, but pretty much all manufacturers (including BlackBerry) will have something new for Q4 of this year.

So come November there will be some deals to be be had on the older models.
  • No is the answer to that. Some may think it does because they have and want one but the fact is Apple will tell a network to sell it at £45 per month with £200 up front because it gives the whole premium thing and people want it because they can't afford it.

The fact is NO iPhone is better than any other smartphone so don't understand what all the fuss and hype is about. This one is meant to have an 8 megapixel camera and dual core processor.......nothing new is it?

From what i've read Samsung and HTC have some pretty good phones on the way.

IMO prices only ever go one way when its to do with electronics (unless they are "antique" status). It may take a while but I'd be suprized if there isn't at least some form of competition with the brands. I do think it'll take a while though, prob a month or two to really make any difference (once profit margins are actually hit).

Probably not toi a great amount.

Apple traditionally don't like selling products at a discount they also don't tell people their plans in advance. The most likely case will be the models (called 4G/4GS/4S/5) will be announced next week.

At that time they'll announce a shipping date, and the currect 3GS/4 models will be reduced for a while to clear some stock.

On the shipping date current stock is usually withdrawn from sale and the new stock used.

If the rumours are to be believed the 3GS will be discontinued. The 4 in 16 and 32 GB will be discontinued and the 4 in 8GB will be introduced. There will also be a 5 introduced (probably 16 and 32 GB again).

However this really is all just rumours and guesses based on history until the announcement next week.

Apple products don't usually see much discounting on price.

If you were to buy a Laptop it may be £1000 when new dropping to £500 over 6 months. Apple Macbooks tend to stay at the set selling price until apple announce an upgrade.

Is it apple setting RRP's or is it the demand, or the fact if you want a mac book you have no choice to buy apple. Either way it means they don't need to price cut to sell.
