No Car tax - quick question
Forgive my ignorance....but if I buy a used car and it hasn't got any tax on it, can I drive it home and then use it until my insurance docs come through - so I can then go and buy the tax disk? Is there any leeway given for this by the DVLA as I can't see how I can get one sooner? BTW, there is an MOT in place on the car, thanks.

No (you can't drive it without TAX) and no (you don't get any leeway from the DVLA).
Having a valid MOT is irrelevant - you still need to TAX the car.0 -
If you are buying from a garage most won't allow you to drive away without valid tax and proof of insurance. As already said you cant drive without Tax, MOT and Insurance before you drive away or even park the car on the road, no ifs buts or maybes.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

You can normally buy the tax disk at the post office at the same time as sending off the new owner slip. So you could do this near the vendor's house, before driving the car. You'll need the insurance and MOT certificates though.0

Neighbours car got towed this morning for no tax. I like how they put big stickers on the screen saying
untaxed vehicle.
I thought wouldnt it be funny to add, "Collected for FREE" underneath.

You don't send off the new keeper slip, you can use it in place of the registration document to license the car at the post office, then you keep it as it acts as the registration document for the new owner until they get their new one from Swansea.0 -
Get the seller to tax it or buy a car that already has tax on.0

Can't you get proof of insurance faxed or emailed through to allow you to go to a local post office to tax it before you drive it away?0

op, sort your insurance out before you go to collect the car, print the docs off and along with the mot and new keeper slip you can tax it at a local post office.

No you can't; the post office won't accept self-printed insurance certificates. I have been in there and this chap who got online insurance was told as much in front of me. maybe if you have a high quality printer they won't know the difference though.
If you drive it home without tax and don't get stopped by the police, are there any other ways they can tell it was driven on the road without tax e.g. fixed cameras on motorways?0 -
