Please try to allow for my Dyslexia in any errors below, in spelling or with grammtical terms, it's a long post and was hard work for me, but I have enjoyed posting.
Hi all,
I'm a newbie to the forum here, but not forums per-se.
Clearly there are many AV apps/software downloads in the Android market both FREE and paid for, as well as AV software for sale in retail shops both online or oin the "high street".
Now, with my having 6 devices, running various Android operating systems, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1 Honeycomb etc..... and with my having tried AV software that is compatible with Firefox which is my preferred browser as it allows better security control than others. I tried many free AV apps, from the variety available in Android Market and elsewhere online and in store on the High Street so, "many" would be fair to say, well, certainly more than ten types for sure.
After much assessment work, I have opted for the LOOKOUT free AV software app in android market and it is actually even better than the AV software I bought at Currys! (Trend Micro AV software, which is a nightmare to load frankly as well). I honestly have uninstalled Trend Micro in favour of my researched and found FREE solution......
LOOKOUT works great, no freezes, no sudden failure to work, EVER - yet, and it has updates for it;s software and its protections regularly.
In my humble (but now pretty much "very experienced") opinion, it is always safer to keep all your apps set for updates to require permitting by your choice and selecting the update manually when this occurs as and when the available updates are found by your device as "update available" in Android Market.
This has another advantage in that any older apps/forgotten apps that you have stopped using may now be worth updating as the update will enable you to start using them again or conversely this manual process and making informed choices may also act as a prompt to remove an app that you no longer want/need/use and thus free up some Android "Real Estate" (memory on device or expansion microSD card or full size SD card).
Now........ from my "tone" you can probably guess that I'm the type of Android user that will ALWAYS click the "read more" icon/words on the update contents before running, just as I do, AND EVERYONE SHOULD DO, NO IFS, NO BUTS, BEFORE installing any app, as it may fundamentally change the permissions you are giving the app. This could be harmless with no ill intent, but it could also be that once the App Author believes it has gained enough market penetration that you then may find someone seeking to now have full access to, and use, your phone contacts data/address book/ browing history or SD card contents like docments for, say, other app launch marketing purposes and/or selling the database they have collated via the app you are updating, consisting of any confirmed Android using contacts you may have too.
It isn't rife, but also sadly it isn't unheard of. G**gle search and read some forums or tech review sites for a few minutes and you can find examples of this shadowy practice.
You can pay to add two features to LOOKOUT, but if you are using Mozilla (Firefox, not the beta version the free Full version) to browse on any Android device, you can achieve both the "paid for" additional options available to buy and add to LOOKOUT.
These purchased additions are: Privacy Browing and Safe Browsing.
There is really no need to buy these if you use Firefox as your browser as you can achieve both of these by going into the very simple and intuitive "settings interface" screen on Firefox from any browser page while you are using Firefox and not lose where you are surfing either. To get into settings for Firefox to do this, just drag the screen from right to left when using Firefox and the little cogged wheel, "Android speak/icon" for SETTINGS will then appear at the bottom right hand corner of your devices screen.
It will appear to slide into view from the side bar, that is attached but kept out of the way of your browsing screen, in Firefox. Dragging left to right gives you access to other features that can be hard work to set up and/or find in other browsers too.
I have no affiliation to LOOKOUT nor to MOZILLA FIREFOX,
Just as I have shown so far, and will explain further I am a real stickler for getting something free when it does the same job as well as, or better than, paid opitons in any part of my life.
I just want to share the soltuion for safe Android phone and/or tablet browsing that I have found to be best and chosen to use from assessing different options with painstaking attention to detail, undertaking assessment carefully and doing it across platforms trying out various ones on Various Android operating systems and on same operating syatems on different devices, criss-crossing to be sure I have covered all angles and seeing which is the best to work with Firefox browser and which runs without constant or overly frequent needs to interact with it, plus.......
it is a FREE solution :T :T
Most people only have one or maybe 2 Android devices, so may not get to run the comparisons easily, concurrently and comparitively quickly and as unbiased as an Android user assessing FREE apps with no AV software Brand loyalty getting in the way, I do have my admitted preference for Firefox's browser on both Android and PC's alike simply due to it's easy to use features and some features other browsers do not even have, or they have them but they are not easily accessed if at all, unless you are an IT wizard, and thes features hand YOU the total control over what happens when you surf. This is why I have Firefox running in unison across all my devices and thus can SYNC all my bookmarks and passwords very easily, and remove that device very easily if lost or stolen too.
So......... for reasons too complex to go into here, I have 6 devices on Android, no wait a minute, I have 7 Android devices!
I just realised I forgot my good ol' 7" Samsung Galaxy Tablet which is one that my best friend is using on her week long Staycation, lol. (I counted the devices I could see here in my lounge and totally forgot the Galaxy Tab which is the oldest device I have on Android. Another bonus with Firefox is that it is incredibly easy (4 clicks if memory serves me) to leave the installed Firefox browser on the device but to remove all my password and favourites data etc to lend it out, I I can also erase surfing and download etc 'history' on that device too.
Once returned from loan, I can add it back to my Firefox useraccount (free as well) and re-sync it in a few seconds, and when I get it back to that positionalso add back all the history I erased too! Superb.......
To clarify LOOKOUT and FIREFOX work great together for secure surfing on:
Galaxy S2 smartphone
XOOM tablet - both wifi only and wifi + 3G version
HTC Wildfire smartphone
10.1" Galaxy Tablet - the model with wifi and 3G.
(that said - the Galaxy 10.1's all have the same operating version of Android -HONEYCOMB so it should be fine on all 10.1's)
and last but not least.....
7" Galaxy Tablet
As a little maths will show you, FREE AV software and SAFE BROWSING as a priority issue now, with online shopping and banking taking place on my devices all the time, is potentially another bundle of money ranging from anything near £70.00 to £280 for my set of devices, or even more costly if I got dumb suddenly and got carried away with software purchasing...... so this free solution is Fantastic!
I could buy a new device with the money saved (well almost) and the new Sony 9.4" tablet looks very nice and takes Full Sized SD cards which are way cheaper than MicroSD cards too. All of its app type selling points are available free from Android Market, but the design is very unique in a tough market.
I hope this long post works with helping others decide, or even serves to go just some small part of the way to help some people decide, what to use for AV protection on their Android device/s.
Even if I have helped just one person it was worth the typing. :A ( lol )
All the best

Most people and phones won't need this. Generally you will only need these if you go to dodgy sites or root/jailbreak the phone to get hacked apps. Unfortunatly the nature of Android being open source makes it far more likely that Android will get these issues.
Remember that this is something else to slow down a phone and eat up data allowances , you don't get the overhead of virus checking/ URL blocking without up to date defintions and some processor time.
The best advice is simply to only use sites and apps you know and are from a trusted source. Keep your phone up to date, and you should have no problems.0
