The XE is made available to order from the 1st but wont be in stores until the 7th with Phones 4U having the bulk of the orders (apparently they have first dibs on this phone). Is set to be around £37 a month (!!!) OR £500 odd to buy. Wow. Definatly aimed at competing with the new iphone. Still can't get my head around how a mobile phone can work out more expensive then a desktop computer-or even laptop for that matter!

Don't get it for the earphones: I have yet to see a proper music buff rate these! If you don't believe me go to the AV forums or other music/audio forums to research.
  • This phone certainly does look swish. I don't think there's any company that lets you pay for SIM Free phones on finance. Unfortunately, you will have to get a loan or large overdraft to do this... £500 is a lot of money... I'd personally wait for a few months until it's gone down in a price a little bit, or wait until a website has a decent discount code floating around...

Indeed, the majority of comments I've seen on Beats headphones have intimated style over substance.

With regard to the Sensation XE, it's basically a original Sensation with new case, Beats software, bigger battery and unlocked processor.

Case aside, you could get a original Sensation at reduced price and then:

    - Get an get an even bigger battery here:

    http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/mugen-htc-sensation-extended-battery-1800mah-p30598.htm

    - Install the Sensation XE ROM from here (which also clocks the processor at 1.5GHz - ADVANCED USERS ONLY):

The good news is you can probably experience the Beats audio 'enhancements' with any Android phone. You can pick up a pair of Beats headphones from eBay and then use a music player with graphic equaliser from the Market. The next part is the magic....turn up the bass frequencies to full, voila, you now have Beats audio!

I don't want to go too far down defending Beats because I haven't tested it properly myself yet, BUT, you need to separate it into 2 things:
The hardware inside the device and
    The earphones.
It's hard to market what goes on inside, but basically there's higher quality chips used for digital to analogue conversion, amplification etc, and these are separated better from the rest of the circuitry. Better isolation etc of internal speakers. Seems to work well.
Earphones are a different matter, I've never used Beats ones, but they're made by Monster, who are infamous for selling big fat audio cables that look better but don't provide any better sound. Seems a lot like marketing over engineering.
    And I'm not sure I trust Dr. Dre's (I don't think he's a real doctor!) ears either!
Off to read up on flashing the Sensation XE firmware....
  • from what i've read its purely software based, obviously not from HTC but...
"We were quite disappointed to find out that the Beats technology is purely software-based - there's no special audio hardware on the inside. But then again this means that it can be ported to other HTC phones, so it's not all bad."

cant post the link as i'm a new member, but its on the gsmarena site
