Tojo those earphones dont look very MSE. :)

I have Lindy noise cancelling earphones £40, they are brilliant and would be my number one thing to take on a long haul flight

They were very MSE, Philips SHN9500's purchased in Costco in the USA for £40 about seven years ago :) Almost as MSE as my Sennheisser PXC-350's .... Again a Costco Billy Bargain, but in the UK. :D

I flew to Egypt a few years ago with Thomson ( I HATE charter airlines) After take off I reclined as it was a very early morning flight and I was tired. The woman behind me punched my seat and when I turned to politely ask was something wrong she told me she couldn't move her legs( huge holdall on her lap for some reason?) and spoke to me in a very cheeky manner. I put my seat upright but felt annoyed as I had paid for my ticket just the same as she. I spoke to cabin crew who told me to recline if I wanted. I went back to my seat, reclined, got another punch and when I turned was told to f*** off and turn around!! Luckily cabin crew spotted this and gave her a good telling off.

My seat remained reclined for the whole journey after that. If she'd have asked nicely I really would have kept it upright or even moved as there were some free seats available but didn't purely due to her attitude. If airlines didn't want you to recline they wouldn't give you the option to do so.

I'm rather glad that we don't get everyone who is taking a Long Haul Flight for the first time asking this sort of question.

But I would like to know what should I do if I walk to the shops and it suddenly starts raining.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

I wouldn't say it's the same sort of question...there's plenty that someone might not think of that might make their flight more enjoyable.

As for the reclining thing, after we board and it starts to calm down I always make a quick trip to the loo...on my way back, I eyeball the leg position of the person behind me...if there's plenty of room I may recline a little (never, ever, ever all the way)...if the person behind me has their knees touching or nearly touching the back of my seat, my seat stays upright. As someone who's arrived for holiday with bruised knees due to a full-recliner in front of me, it's quite a nice thing when the person in front of me doesn't assume because they can recline it's free reign to do as they like, just a little bit of courtesy goes a long way. And while I know that some people do purposely nudge the seat in front of them, probably most of us only do so when you've reclined so far anytime we move (which probably we have to do a lot as you've wedged our legs in an umcomfortable position that we have to shift regularly to keep the pain at bay) we bump your seat. So sorry about that.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

that's an interesting work-around...so you do this with a variety of programmes - watch a bit, pause, etc? I haven't tried watching more than one programme at a time on iplayer so not familiar with exactly how that would work but is very interesting.

Download the programmes to the ipad then they all sit there and you click on any to watch. When you first press "play" it checks that you are in the UK, after that it doesn't. So I download all that I want, then make sure I have watched the first 30 seconds of each to avoid any problems.

SO once on the plane - in flight mode - you can pick any of the downloads as they are all in a paused state.

30 seconds is enough on each one.

I'll never forget one long haul flight, tokyo to london. My dad got put on a seat across the aisle from us by his lonesome. Little Japanese businessman comes in (I bet he did the route like clockwork and had his routines) and literally as soon as he sat down on tarmac put his seat back. My dad is fairly tall so his legs took up most of the room and from our view it looked like this fella's head was in my dad's lap. He fell asleep instantly too and began snoring like a dying camel.

Got woken my air stewardesses to put it up for takeoff, did so, stayed awake until seatbelt signs went off, back down he goes, asleep instant, more dying animal noises. Was absolutely hilarious. Five minutes before landing, he woke up like clockwork too. Jealous!

I always make sure I take a DS and a game of Pokemon! It is a fantastic time waster and not just for kids!! Hours will fly by playing it. Also put some nice relaxing music on my phone to try and help me lul off. A lot of people won't advise it, but I tend to get tipsy on brandy and it helps me sleep a lot better (with lots of water ofc).

Last time we had a long haul we had a little lad kicking the back of our seats for about an hour. Just rolled our eyes and got on with it, we've had bad experiences confronting kids/parents/grown men asking for them politely not to do this in the past and it's never ended well.

Anyway, OH gets up to go to the toilet, glances at the mother and gets told to "F**k off" without even saying anything!!! The people make the flight :D

What to take on a long haul flight?

The first turning to the left as you enter the plane.
Criky, I just noticed that I answered this thread a couple of years ago when we actually travelled economy:eek:
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

There's usually a massive choice of films and TV programmes to watch on the in-flight entertainment system so there's no need to download stuff unless there's something you specifically want to watch...
