I sent a brief email to 0800flowers.com asking about the hike in prices.

    "Thank you for your e-mail.

As we are an internet service, the majority of orders we are taking currently are forward requirements for Valentines Day. As such, we have to apply the increases that occur in the Dutch Markets at that time. Indeed, the price of roses in particular has already started to rise. Be assured, we would rather not increase prices and indeed we do not pass on the whole increase as flower prices would be astronomical, as you will see in most flowers shops.

You can always buy cheaper but we only stock the top grade Dutch X."
  • Just noticed that Asda are offering free delivery on flowers http://www.asda.co.uk/corp/home.html

    Hope it helps.

  • This idea goes down quite well - you can either go for a standard valentines gift or create your own message/s.

ive booked a nice romantic meal for me and my boyfriend for the 15th unfortunaltley he is on nights on the 14th and we wont see each other.....

So were celebrating it on the 15th and the meal will be half the price thats money saving for you !!

Exactly! Me and my b/f often go out for our V. Day meal not on the 14th - it is SUCH a rip off, they shove a plastic rose up your nose on the way in and hike up the prices for one day. Revolt everyone - revolt!! :D

Can I just note a word of caution for when you’re ordering from all of these internet based flower companies. Make sure you ask them who and how the flowers will be delivered.

It might surprise you that most either take your order and relay them through either Teleflorist or Interflora to a florist in the area to be made. Even if you Google or look in https://www.yell.co.uk for a florist in say Durham you’ll get one or two that look local (they ‘buy’ the addresses to look local), but aren’t, or they will use https://www.yell.com to find a florist in that area then place your order with them. Last year on Watchdog there was a company who say took an order for £35, then passed it onto a florist in the delivery area for a £15 bouquet.

Have a look at the threads below to see that just because it might be cheap, that it might not be very nice. Most of the offers for really cheap roses (as per the M&S link. http://www.marksandspencer.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Section_Id=11171&Product_ Id=1963420&extid=k_msf) are short cheap roses to start with, so if you want to give your loved one a decent present then make sure you know what your getting.

Supermarkets are muscling in on all the smaller traders in the ‘High Street’. They cherry pick the lucrative things to do, and do them cheaper and that’s what closes the independent trader. It has been shown by the number of complaints on here that in some instances purchasing on price isn’t best practice.

Fortunately because Florists do provide more of a service they have lasted the onslaught for longer. If you don’t use them and they all go to the wall who will be left to do what the supermarkets aren’t interested in? Like your funeral flowers or your Wedding flowers?

When you buy these cheap bouquets, all your buying is cheap roses. As Tesco have illustrated in past years their ‘Finest’ roses were the same price as most other independent florists.
