  • Couldn't you cycle the same route you'd have to walk

The obvious answer is a bicycle, at least until you've saved up enough money to buy that cheap car.

    Great 'answer'.

Should be fun cycling home in the winter months - especially if we have the amounts of snow the have fallen in the past couple of years.

The OP would also have to make sure that the bus company would allow him to take a bike on the bus during the day.

As mentioned earlier, some people are on a different planet.

OP - have you spoken to Nissan? There might be an employee car share scheme; they might run their own bus; they might be prepared to give you an advance on your wages; they might let you work slightly different hours; or they might come up with something else entirely.

Some of those are very long shots - but if you can't take the job otherwise, it's worth asking them.
  • If they can't afford to pay for transport to and from their place and work, how on earth are they to afford the cost of moving or renting a room?

    Bus fare £5 + Taxi £25 = £30.

Most places it shouldn't be too hard to find a B&B for less than that, for 4-5 night regular bookings.

Or is there a bothy or somewhere the OP could doss down for the night, before getting a morning bus home?
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • I'm confused. How are the jobcentre 'doing you over'
You willingly applied for a job that you knew you wouldn't
be able to get back from. I'm sure that knowing the position
you would be in if you were to be successful, you asked the
interviewing panel if they ran a car share or other type of
scheme ;) No? Why ever not?

Why should the jobcentre lend you the money for a car? Christ
man, what planet do you live on?

But a bit of helpful advice.. ask the jobcentre about a wheels 2 work
or similar scheme running in your area, most counties have one,
they will lend you a scooter for a small fee and pay for you to do a
    CBT.

If push comes to shove there's always the likes of payday loans and
those ever so helpful doorstep lenders at the provvy...

Unless he wasn't aware of which shift it would be until he was offered the job.

On those days, and by then, perhaps the OP would have sorted a car out. I don't believe snow is forecast in the immediate future.

Many people take a bike to work, I had to buy one when my old car died on me and I couldn't afford to have it mended. Summer, spring, autumn and lo and behold, winter.

And he can bike TO work as well as home, rather than have a bike and get on the bus *what planet are YOU on?].

Plus, once the OP has started, they might be able to get a lift some or all of the way with other people leaving at the same time. If it is by a motorway then it's highly likely others will be travelling along the self same motorway some or all of the distance the OP needs.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

When sanctioning you the jobcentre have to take into account whether you had good cause for refusing a job. Your adviser wont tell you this they will just threaten you and sanction you and then you would need to appeal. If you went to CAB or Welfare Rights they will do a better off calculation and if you really can't afford to take the job then it can be good cause.

However after 7 months you know the job market and jobs at Nissan are coveted do you really want to turn down this opportunity? You don't say what your other outgoings are, like rent etc so its hard to tell whether you will be worse off or if there are other things you can apply for.

If you can't pedal could you not get a friend / family to pick you up for the first few shifts until you find a lift? I know its the middle of the night but if its the difference between working and not! Ring some taxi firms ask them for a quote for a contract for the first 2 weeks which will be cheaper than single taxis. There will be more than you at Nissan who don't drive or don't have transport the suggestion of a note in the canteen for sharing lifts is a good idea.

Don't know how you think you're being done over by the jobcentre. You really need a 'can do' attitude in this job market and especially at Nissan.

If it really doesn't work you can always leave and sign back on and show good cause for leaving your job.

If they can't afford to pay for transport to and from their place and work, how on earth are they to afford the cost of moving or renting a room? Jeez, I wonder if people actually live on this planet!

The OP was talking about £30 a day, six days a week = £180. I walked past a signboard yesterday saying "Room to rent £70 a week". I know different areas have different prices, and admit I don't know where Nissan are, but this is a seaside resort so if it is possible to get a room for £70 a week here I expect something similar might be available elsewhere.

No need for such a sarcastic tone.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

To be fair though, you did also suggest that the OP moves house just because they've got a job 13 miles away. It was a tad extreme

    .

To be honest though, it's probably too far for a novice (if he is a novice) cycler to be doing. Even just coming home is a half marathon in the early hours of the morning. How many people do you know who cycle a marathon every day?
