Help with excessive body odour :(

  • Hi,

First of all, good for you for bringing up a "delicate" issue.

As people have said it's the bacteria which cause the smell, not the sweat per se, so to tackle the underlying cause what about a bath (luke-warm) with a capful of dettol or savlon? Or a wipe over your danger zones with a sponge/flannel dipped in mild solution of said anti-bacs before you put on your deoderant.

Also keeps towels changed regularly too.

Works for me, as I find when I am under stress at work (big meeting etc.) I can get a bit whiffy !
  • I worry about being whiffy too - I go through phases when I feel that I smell worse than other times, not just a sweaty smell but sometimes feel I stink like a polecat. Particularly after a sweaty restless night in bed. I am planning to try Hibiscrub to see if killing the bacteria on the skin helps. MY plan is maybe use it every day for a week as long as skin tolerates it then cut down to a couple of times per week to keep on top of things. This is the stuff used to wash hands prior to operating so should kill off any bugs etc.

POstage can be a bit steep, maybe a local pharmacy could order it in cheaper.
  • I know what you mean about restless nights. I definitely smell a difference (on me) between:-

"honest, hardworking sweat" and "stressed-out nervous sweat"

................sorry about the unfortunate "turn" this post has taken !

There is a difference and its to do with the different proteins you release when you feel different things (eg fear or pleasure or anxiety...etc).

OP, if it is a bacterial problem, Holland and Barrett do a tea tree oil soap that may help. It's the only thing that's got my athlete's foot under control. OK, I know that's a fungal infection, but still.
Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!
  • I used Hibiscrub when I had problems, and when DD started to get that distinctive teenager smell, where it lingered even straight after showering, she used it for about a week or so and she smells sweet again.

I also hot washed all clothes - and binned a few things that held onto smell after being treated and washed a couple of times.

    It seemed to work.

I find the dove stick is very good for keeping whiffs at bay but it does tend to stain the underarms of white tops. Vests especially.
Another thing I find is that when you have a tight top on, the sweat kind of collects. You become aware of it and then keep your arms clamped by your sides which makes you sweat even more. You then start getting twitchy about the sweat and the worry of odours which makes the sweat worse and a nervous sweat. And so it continues. Have you been wearing a waterproof by any chance whilst you've been dog walking? I find that I get really sweaty when I have mine on without the fleece lining in it. It's very annoying.
I really hope you get this sorted :)

  • Hi!! so sorry it took me long to reply!

The doctor prescribed me Andryhol Forte - It looks just like a roll on (well - it is a roll on!) you put it on at night, wash it off in the morning and no sweating all day :) One thing i will say - DO NOT use this on the day you shave your underarms - it STINGS LIKE MAD!!!

There isnt much info about it on the web (I'd certainly never heard of it until I got it from the doctor!) but I'd speak to you doctor about it x (One of my friends said she buys it, I'll ask her where from!)

But it's the only thing I can use without sweating - I dont use it ALL the time - it works for a while - I use normal anti pers on my "other" days but thats more force of habit than actually needing it!

    Good luck!
  • Is there any medication you're on that might cause this change?

I use Perspirex for my underarms as I find it really does stop me sweating - I don't use it every day and definately don't use it when I've shaved my armpits as it hurts! I've also used Driclor before but I prefer Perspirex. But I'd agree, go and see your GP as it sounds like its an overall problem.
  • Thank you everyone for the great replies :D

**Juice**-I'm not on any medication at all currently-I have a tablet-taking phobia which I developed just over 4 years ago, since then, no meds at all unless its liquid! Not even taken liquid paracetamol in the last 6 months or so.

Kaz2904-Thats exactly what I do!! As soon as I notice the whiff my arms are clamped down, which of course makes it worse! I think the stains I am getting are a combination of sweat, and the deoderant thats been sloughed off by the sweat, so I need to stop the sweat in the first instance, I really don't want (nor can I afford!) to throw away my clothes and replace them. I don't tend to wear a waterproof, if it rains I get wet! My waterproof is one of those breathable ones too, so I don't seem to get sweaty like in the plastic ones, good thought though!

Mimi Arc en ciel-Thank you for PMing me as well as posting, I appreciate that :) I will definitely ask my Dr about that stuff, it sounds great (if not a little odd...it works AFTER washing it off?! Weird!)

Hibiscrub and tea-tree soap, are these drying does anyone know? I have stupid skin-very greasy, and soaps usually make it greasier as it over-reacts to their drying effect. I usually use one of those moisturising showergels (Imperial Leather, soft-something currently) to stop the 'OMG, Chip Shop!' effect. ;)

I will be seeing my GP soon, I think I need to write a list of all these suggestions to take with me :D
Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!
