We have to tell people before opening new accounts. Think I've only had one person reconsider.0

I know there are restrictions against poaching customers during the branch sale, but since this person came in to open an RBS account, wouldn't it have been acceptable for the cashier to inform them that they could open an RBS account at a Scottish branch ?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Having customers scattered across England whose branch is in Scotland hardly seems desirable, either for RBS or for the customers. I expect it'll have to be resolved at some point, probably by encouraging people to move to their local NatWest."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -

It's not due to happen until the 2nd half of 2012 (According to the RBS website)"No problem. Just pop up to our Gretna branch with two forms of ID."

It is possible to open an account at any branch just by choosing the branch you prefer (either online, or via an application form from the local branch)
Lots of people run their bank accounts quite successfully without ever needing to visit their own branch, so for those people it matters not what the geographic location is for their branch.
Although RBS and NatWest are part of the same parent group, they remain distinct banking entities, so I doubt any encouragement to transfer would take place. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

But the branches will all be in Scotland.
Yeah thats not a problem.
Just because you open an account in say London it dont matter if you take your ID to a branch in the Outer Hebrides for example, everything is centralised now adays.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0
