OP - a stand at a wedding fayre can cost upwards of £120, sometimes you can pick up one for £60 if you are really lucky. It might be worth putting your cards in the local florist, photographer studio and hairdressers.
I missed your posting where you mentioned a part time job - just don't want you thinking that you will be making thousands when you start off because you won't.
I know all about bullying bosses - I was made redundant after having one as it was easier to get rid of me instead of him.0 -
Is that not advising the OP to commit fraud?
You can work up to 16hours in IS provided you declare all your earnings and your benefit will be cut accordingly.
Over 16 hours and you claim tax credits - you can also claim HB and CTB as well as 70% of childcare costs. No brainer really.0 -
The stumbling blocks I see are:
- tanning is a very seasonal business, I'm not sure when the peak times are but I have a customer who owns a salon and says it is highly seasonal
- if you want to do wedding and hen night parties it will probably take you at least a couple of months from now to get on the wedding fayre circuit and potential brides will then be looking for services to use 6 months down the line. Weddings are also highly seasonal.
Basically while there may be good money to be had it could take at least a year before the wedding market takes off - maybe you've already missed summer weddings 2012? As wedding fayes are expensive and like any promo I expect they are hit & miss it might take a year or two before you know what events to attend.
Can your personal circumstances allow for a highly seasonal cashflow? Will you have the time to devote to all the promo? It is no good just finding out what experienced operators are making, you need to know how long they took to get there and what their month by month cashflow is. BTW as Horace alluded to don't rely on what friends and family say, especially if they have promised to book you.0 -
Tanning is not seasonal work, yes it is more worth while in the summer but there are halloween, xmas and new year parties, valentines etc where people want tans for the party season.
But,I am not just doing tanning, I also do mani, pedi, gelish, shellac, rockstar, acrylic nails, gel nails, waxing, eyelash extensions, massage etc. I do a whole range of beauty treatments not just tanning.
I will be offering all these services at wedding fayres, hall fetes pamper evenings at large halls. There is one of these every month local to me and its only £5 to have a stall and there is a large market there where I can hand out my cards etc.
Like I have mentioned before I have spoken to 1000+ beauticians who have there own companies, who have started out like I have and made it very successful.
It will take me 6 months to a year to build my client base up. I have lots of friends that are going to be going out at the weekends and wearing tshirts that I will be getting printed.
Word of mouth is the biggest advertisment for beauty, I will be giving cards out to everyone, flyering, advertising in the free ads,on gumtree, in my local paper etc.
My friend was at a wedding fayre at the weekend as she makes vintage jewellery and she said there is no one offering what I offer. So having to pay an amount to get a stall at a fayre will be pennies to what clients I could be booking in. After researching,I have made several bespoke bride and bridesmaid packages to which I have shown brides to be and they said it would be everything they need.
I will be offering pamper packages, girly nights in,pampers before a night out, princess parties etc so I am not just doing on thing. I have a large variety to offer.0 -

Yes, I am going to be putting them in wedding shops, florists, cake makers, little boutiques etc. I know I wont be making thousands im not that dillusional, but I know with hard work and persistance I can make it work. It will take me a while to build it up but is that any reason not to try and make a successful business?
I just think life is too short for some egotistical idiot to be picking on me and making my life hell when I can try and make my life better.0 -
Do you know how much a stall at a wedding fayre is?
Don't forget that you will need a business bank account as well.
Yes I do know how much a wedding stall is, you have to speculate.
I have to spend money on advertising to be able to get anywhere.
I find your posts very negative, I am just trying to do something better with my life than the job I am in now.
Maybe I should just go on benefits im sure you would whinge then so cant win.
I work fulltime, look after my 2 children, keep my house, pay all my own bills all being a single parent no help or maintainence. I am just trying to do something with the qualifications that I worked hard for. Dont see why you have to be so negative.0 -

I'm not being negative, I'm being realistic.
No one has forced you to have two kids so you should stop bringing them into it. Are you not already on benefits? You just need to live in the real world where you will not be making £1000 per week when you start up just because someone down the road told you that you would be.
Starting a business takes time to develop, it's not an instant cash cow.
As for the business bank account, you will have to have this unless you want HMRC going through all your personal account details. It will also make your life a lot easier and give you a professional look.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -
Did I say I would be making £1000 when I start out? No I didnt, I advised you of what a women who now owns a succesful tanning company made through hard work and determination.
Did I say I was forced to have children? No I didnt. I was stating my personal conditions and how I wanted to make them better! Not blaming my children for circumstances. I think you need to stop being so argumentative.
I do believe I am being realistic in the fact I have already said it will take me atleast 6 months to a year to get my client base. That is will take me a long time to have a profit making successful business. Obviously you only read what you want to read.
In earlier posts you made out I was stupid for giving away my services for free, saying I should charge and then someone posts saying I should claim IS and declare my earnings if I am working 16hrs or less and you say I would be committing fraud. I think you need to stop contradicting yourself.
If you have nothing useful to say but negatives then dont post as it is not helpful. I have looked into this so much and I have answered every question everyone has asked me. I not just doing this for the fun of it you know!!
Maybe I should just do what other people do,go on benefits, and do peoples nails and beauty treatments on the side and not declare it. I am only trying to do it the right way.
Thanks for your unhelpful comments. Not needed.0 -

Unfortunately, that's exactly what you will be up against.0
