The friends of friends that you've done work for, have you charged them or given away freebies? Surely it's counter productive? You're using all your own eqiupment and supplies yet not charging.

  • It does feel like some people are trying to give me a hard time, I know they are only helpful words but I honestly wouldn't do this if I didnt think I could make a success out of it.

I have researched and researched in all areas, I seriously have done my homework.

I have already asked to drop down to 2 days a week that gives me 16 hrs and then the rest I can work and arrange my childrens schedules. They will not let me.

I get my pay this Friday so I will pay my rent, and will speak to my LL. They are a housing association. As I get WTC run on for 4 weeks after the date I leave my current job, I will be looking for P/T work. I have actually found several today that I will be applying for when I get in tonight.

I am putting my heart and soul into this after all the training and research I have done. I really want it to work and I believe 100% it will.

There is no one in my area doing childrens parties - dont worry not tanning :) , or pamper parties, bridal and hen nights. There are so many things I can do not just your run of the mill acrylics. I cant explain myself fully in what I can do because I will be here forever but I am not just an average nail technician or beautician and I understand I will have competition from others but I will be providing the best service possible and in hoping they will stay with me. I will always lose some customers to cheaper deals but they are not the longstanding clients I want anyway.

Thank you for all your helpfull replies

Well then that would be tax fraud charging for services and not disclosing it. I dont believe it is counter productive when all of the people I have worked on have been my mentors so to speak. They tell me what I should do differently. What they would like. Where I was going wrong. They will be my advertising like they have been already.

The people I have worked on have been close friends and family, my family arnt the type to be fuddy duddy, they will tell me the truth no matter what, this is why they have been my models.

Rather than jumping ship straightaway, look for part time work and register your self employment with the HMRC. It is possible to be an employee and be self employed at the same time.

Please don't rely on the advice of friends and family because they will all blow smoke up your backside telling you what you want to hear and not the actual realities of everything. Self employment is tough - I have been self employed for 2 years now and in that time have not had a holiday, I get working tax credits which are quite low (I don't have kids) and I get housing and council tax benefits. I was doing ok until July this year when I started suffering from depression and I had to take time away - now I am struggling to stay in business as everything is going down the pan. I set up another arm of my business in May and although this has the potential to make money, it isnt so far because I don't have the money to advertise or attend other networking events so I have been getting less than the minimum wage. Please do not make the same mistake as me - I am being forced to sign on the dole whilst I look for work (not easy when you have a disability and age is against me too - I have already been told by agencies that I am unemployable).

I looked at my business plan today, I had to laugh because according to my plan I would have been turning over £32K in my first year - I didnt and I made a loss again last year. Please don't fill your head with inflated ideas of what you could earn because Mrs SprayTan down the road gets £1000 a month - MrsSprayTan is likely to see you as a competitor any way and isn't going to tell you the truth.

No-one is saying that you should stay in a job that you hate but it is easier to get a job when you have one than getting one when you have been self employed.

I have already said I am going to get a part time job and work on the business. I have a month after I leave work to find a part time placement. I have several positions that I need to apply to today.

Lol - Mrs Spray Tan lives no where near me - I had to train out of Coventry as there was no reputable companies to train with in Coventry that would give me the certs I need for insurance purposes etc so I dont think she is inflating her ideas, she was merely stating how she got where she was. Started off like me and got bigger and then finally opened up her own businesses. She and her husband own one of the biggest spray tan stockists in the UK so I think she has done quite well considering she only started like me.

I am not expecting this to happen over night. It is going to take time I know that and there are risks involved but I am willing to do whatever it takes to get where I need to be.
  • But it isn't just a job the OP hates, it's a job where she faces the stress of bullying every day as well as being a single parent and sole breadwinner. Only someone who's been in that position can appreciate how quickly her get up and go will get up and go and she won't be in a position to get her own business up and running!

You shouldn't need WTC run on if you are starting your beauty work straight away as you can still claim it being self-employed, you just need to let them know about a change of job. I assume that when you hand your notice in at your current job then you will be looking to start booking customers in for as soon as possible after you finish? I would ring tax credits with an estimate based on that for hours and income and then re-evaluate in say a month and call them to change it if needed. If you're going to be on a lower income to start with then could also be worth looking at housing and council tax benefit until business picks up. Good luck with it.
  • Yes, as soon as I have handed in my notice I will be booking customers in. I have designed some cards, car magnets, going to do flyers at home then start mailing various companies and visit shops and wedding fayres. There is a wedding fayre next month so I will try and get in that.

I will be offering certain treatments at half price for the week to entice customers, I will be doing group discounts etc. I have done a price list after researching other beautcians, not undercutting them but making sure I have enough profit after costs.

I am good at what I do,god knows how late I have been up some nights perfecting my treatments. I have trained hard and I believe with the right level of service and prices it will work for me.

    Thank you

Do you know how much a stall at a wedding fayre is?

Don't forget that you will need a business bank account as well.

Op, as your children are little you could claim income support, without being sanctioned. You could then build yours buisness up and just declare any earnings. Until you can go it alone.
