working fulltime! want to go SE! How?

Options
Hi,

I work fulltime, and I really hate my job. I have been getting bullied by one of the sales men who thinks he is a hotshot round here. I work in a different city to where I live and also have 2 children, one in school(just started) and one in nursery.

My nursery fees were £350 per week and have just gone down to £185 as my son has gone on to school but he before and after school club is £200 per month.

I am seriously struggling to live off my wage (only £900 per month) and still paying out for childcare, bills, rent etc and get to work. I have not paid my rent for 3 weeks now so I can pay my childcare and other bills so now Im in the red with my landlord. :( arrgghh

Anyway, I currently work in sales, since last december I have trained and now I am a fully qualified beauty therapist and nail technician and want to start my own mobile beauty business.

How does this work with tax credits, obviously I am quitting my fulltime job as I cannot do it anymore, its depressing me so much to the point where I cannot sleep at night,I nearly fell asleep on the A45 and I just cry in my office.

How do I estimate what hours I will be working and what I will be making?
What other things do I have to do. I know I have to ring TC to inform them of me leaving work when I actually do.
I dont want to take my daughter out of nursery as she learns so much and has made so many friends.

Can anyone give me any pointers or info to help me out?I have read over the business link website but I cant get my head round it. My brain doesnt seem to function anymore.

Thank you :)

  • You will find most people will do both their sole trader and employed life at the same time for a period to build up their client base etc so that the self employment will be able to support you. If you were to just quit the day job and start off self employed then firstly your going to have to have funds to buy the equipment and insurances you will need/ should have and then it could be a couple of months with minimal income as you try and build up a client base.

For the sole trader part you will need to notify HMRC as soon as youre about to start and register to make your National Insurance Class 2 payments or register as exempt from them. At year end (april) you'll then have until the following January to submit your self assessment tax return to HMRC online. Cannot help with benefits as its not my area of knowledge.

I don't know what your benefit entitlements might be, especially as you are voluntarily leaving a job. I believe your local job centre can give you good advice though.

What I would think about, before you jump ship, is can the country really find room for yet another mobile beauty business? Have you done any research to see if there is a genuine customer base? People who will actually use you on a regular basis at proper rates rather than encouragement from friends and family?

If you are certain of getting the customers then work out your costings carefully, materials, advertising, petrol, etc. and remember you are giving up a "certain" wage for a very "uncertain" one.

So you can't live on £900 a month but you think that self employed beauty therapy is going to bring in more than that from day one?

If you quit your full time job then you will probably be sanctioned for it which I believe is 26 weeks.

If you're being bullied in the workplace then speak to your union rep or speak to your manager/HR.

  • I have all equipment needed to start my business, I have thought and thought about it,trained properly and saved for my equipment.

I know it may seem I am voluntarily leaving my job, but I am having a seriously hard time of it at the moment. I am the only girl in the office, the man in question steals my leads and my work, he speaks to me like dirt,he made me cry the other day due to the fact I had won a contract and he tried to take it so I stood up for myself and got verbally abused. I have spoken to my manager to which I was told there would be a meeting to resolve. No meeting and no resolution! The man in question is so far up my managers butt that he will not do anything!! I cannot take him to court for constructive dismissal as have only been here for 9 months. Another business development manager is willing to be a witness for me,to prove that I am being bullied. Im 24 years old and work my butt off and I shouldnt have to put up with it,so I am not leaving just on a whim, this job is killing me :((

I have done my research, there is no one like me offering a professional service like I will be. I am also going into jewellry parties with my friend who also is SE. I have alot to offer,I have done research and have a fair few people who want these treatments as they havent got time to go to the salon or dont want to. They want a relaxed mobile service. Which I will offer :)

I have treated friends and family, and had many people ring me for treatments as they have seen my work. I am the only mobile therapist in my area to offer what I offer.

I am not doing this on a whim,I have done my research, spoken to many beauty therapists, nail techs etc. The woman who trained me in spray tanning started off like me and earnt £1000 per week. She now owns 2 salons and only started last year.

People assume that you make no money in the beauty industry, you dont if you work in a salon or renting a chair. You do if you are mobile. I only have to do 5 spray tans a week to earn my weekly wage now. Never mind nail services or waxing. xx I have more than 5 people asking me for services per week.

    :)

If you walk out, it doesn't matter if you've been bullied, made fun off, or someone made you cry. You VOLUNTARILY left your job.

A search on Yell.com offers me 53 mobile beauty therapists in Coventry. I find it hard to believe that you are the only person to offer a "professional service".

And how much have you charged them or have you done it free of charge?

What makes you different? Why are you different?

Is that actually true or something someone has told you, lots of things are believable if you want them to be. If true, how long before all those with salons and renting chairs give up their premises and go into competition with you?

How many people might already be doing this "on the side" that you are not aware of?

What is to stop anyone else doing exactly the same thing and taking your customer base?

So I have to stay in a job I hate? A job that is making me seriously depressed! Thats fair! I will be looking for a part time job to tide me over but I cannot work fulltime in this environment and not being able to afford childcare as the major cuts have happened and to be in debt £300-400 every month.

I am the only one to offer the services what I offer! I have searched and searched for what I offer salons and mobile and they do not do it. I offer a range of services not just one.My services differ to other therapists and Im not just a beautician. I offer nail services, skin services, massaging, tanning, waxing etc.

I have done alot of research and training in what I want to do. Not just jumped into it and thought yay I will be a beautician today.

I have spoke to over 1000 beauticians, skin therapists, tanning and nail techs, they do what I do just all over the country. I have asked them many a question etc, found out information straight from the horses mouth. I have researched and researched and spent hours upon hours of talking to beauticians and nail techs etc..

They do earn a better wage than a beautician renting a room from a salon. Most salon based techs do not want to do mobile work as they like the comfort of having the salon job. Some techs cant work mobile, they cant drive, they just dont want to do mobile work.

If I offer the best service that I can,at the best price I can give them then they will stay with me. Its about using incentives to keep your customers and give them the best service possible. I have all this down and it has all been gone over..

All this advice has been given to me by other very successful mobile therapists. In the future I want to own my own salon and employ others. I do not want to work in a salon. I can work my hours around my children and my clients.

Maybe I should just stick with this job and have no aspirations in life
