Tesco Return - Is this right?

But AFAIK, the money is not refunded straight away, can take up to 3 days for it to show, back in the account, so they would not have the £6 to spend immediately.
If someone doesn't have £6 spare in their bank account I think they have much greater problems than a slightly awkward Tesco returns policy.0 -
I thought they won't give cash because the card payment would have attracted a merchants transaction fee.
Some retailers will give you a gift card because you are still spending the money with them.0 -
Thanks DWatts for your comment. Unfortunately due to losing my job earlier this year I've had to take a lower paid job with increased travelling and childcare costs so money is extremely tight. In response, no, two days before payday I don't have £6 in my bank account to buy food for my family. This is why I use this website, to get help with my finances and support from people in similar situations not criticism from people who have no understanding of my situation, but I'm obviously in the wrong place. Apologies for wasting anyone's time.
Thank you to everyone else who have offered up more supportive answers.0 -

Who one earth has criticised you :huh:0 -
OP, you had already spent the £6 so as far as you were concerned you didn't have it anymore. It wasn't in your account anymore
Companies should refund by the original method of payment to prevent fraud.
The credit would have gone on your card and you could still have used the card to buy the food you wanted.0 -
Shops are encouraged to refund money in the same way as they recieve it, ie onto a card or in cash, to prevent money laundering.
Most places will stick with refunding in the same way to the same card, although it seems they tried to help you by offering you money off the same department. The food and home departments will be accounted seperately.
It's rubbish, but its the guidelines which shops are given, and have to train their staff in. They are fined otherwise!
It's actually stronger than guidelines, its in the agreement that the retailer has to sign in order to take cards.
Now, they aren't going to cause problems for Tesco with one transaction. However a large retailer will process many hundreds of card refunds a day.
I agree that it seems daft that they can't refund as a credit note, but that's the way it is.0 -
I had to go back and re-read the whole thread not a bad reply there. (Were any removed?)

I'm sorry if you took offence from my comment, it was honestly meant as a joke. I wasn't criticizing you at all.
Like others have said, though, the money had already gone from your bank account so had the item not been faulty, you would never have that extra £6 in your account at any point. If your finances are really that tight, you should desperately look into fixing them - £6 on a food shop shouldn't be enough to push you over the edge.0
