Tesco Return - Is this right?

Options
Hello,

Just a quick query. I took a headlight back to Tescos yesterday as it didn't work when I opened it up. I bought it on the 28th August and it cost £5.99. Although the Tesco lady queried the date there was no issues with the return. Until.....I originally paid on my card but as I wanted to do some shopping in Tescos i asked for a credit note so I could just use the money instead of it going back into my bank account. They said no, it had to go back on my card. When I asked why i couldn't just exchange it they said I could but only for something in the same department, i.e. non food. I only wanted to get some food and didn't need anything else but they said that was the rule. Is this right?

Surely if they have £6.00 of my money, I should be able to get it back on any items in their shop?

Thanks.

Shops are encouraged to refund money in the same way as they recieve it, ie onto a card or in cash, to prevent money laundering.

Most places will stick with refunding in the same way to the same card, although it seems they tried to help you by offering you money off the same department. The food and home departments will be accounted seperately.

It's rubbish, but its the guidelines which shops are given, and have to train their staff in. They are fined otherwise!

They want to create a paper trail to help reduce fraud by staff.
  • Thanks peeps. just thought it a bit unfair that I couldn't spend the money on food. In the end just accepted the money back on my card, so at least I've got it back!

I had the same a few weeks ago when returning clothing, could only refund or exchange for something from that department.

Basically, the checkout operator just said it was the rules and they couldn't really do anything about it.

I wasn't that bothered to be fair though.

But you can spend it on food. You have £6 back in your bank account. If you then do a shop in Tesco, you're effectively reducing your food bill by £6 (or indeed any other bill you wish to reduce). It's just psychological.

As fair as i'm aware they can still refund the card though. It would only be problematic if the account associated to the card had been closed.

no.. infact it's not a right to be able to purchase their products, so you cannot insist on them letting you use it on other products at all.

But AFAIK, the money is not refunded straight away, can take up to 3 days for it to show, back in the account, so they would not have the £6 to spend immediately.
