If you have no stored hot water then it's a combi.

    1) Does the central heating work normally? Set the room stat to a level where it calls for heat and see how the boiler copes with that. Does it also cut out before reaching temp?

    2) Are you sure the water pressure is up to the necessary min. level per the boiler spec?

    Post findings.
  • I feel sick.

I have no heating and hot water. I have tried resetting and switching the boiler off and on again. The light comes on but the boiler is not making any sound when it usually does.

So you have power to the boiler. What does the pressure gauge read now? Is the loop properly closed, connected or disconnected? Is there any discharge from the pressure relief valve overflow?

  • power to boiler. when not running the tap, gauge is 1.5. when running the tap, hot water comes out but gauge slowly creeps up to 2 and goes back down to 1.5 when water goes cold again.
    l

loop closed. what do you mean about discharge from pressure relief valve. dont know where it is? sorry

Shouldn't really need to be higher than 1 bar when at cold. The PRV has an overflow pipe from it to discharge any excess pressure. It will run through the external wall and terminate there. Not to be confused with the condensate drain (if it's a condensing combi).

To replace the filing loop, the plumber will have had to drain the boiler. It could be air in the boiler (which will vent if you leave it a bit) and/or your pressure is wrong. Logically, it must be something simple, however, so no need to panic. the pressure relief is a pipe that goes through the wall and bends back towards the house..

I dont have anything running through external wall. When I had my boiler serviced a while ago. This was mentioned but I never got round to getting someone in to fix this. Is this going to prevent air discharge?
  • called original plumber back. I am told that my aav has no vent cap on it so it cannot release trapped air. ( air lock?) After I've stopped crying, I need to spend more money and call out a wochester boiler engineer. :(

PRV (safety device) kicks in if the boiler has too much pressure and its normally vented to the outside..... Air on the other hand is controlled by some form of air admittance valve that allows air into (and out of) the system but not water.

Re the PRV - what exactly did the report say? Not having a vent somewhere doesn't make any sense.

You must have an aav - mine is part of the boiler mechanism itself (as is the PRV)!

    What model do you have?
