Let me clarify this for you.

The Premier current account comes with free european multi-trip travel insurance and covers up to the age of 65. Provided by Aegis now I believe. It earns 0% in credit interest and overdrafts are charged at 50p per day capped at £10 per month.

The Premier Direct current account DOES NOT come with free insurance, pays 1% variable on balances of up to £2,500 after the first year. Overdraft charging is the same.

The Premier Direct TRAVEL (this is different from the Premier and Premier Direct and is older than both of the above. There are relatively few of these accounts still knocking about) comes with the free insurance of the Premier and also pays 1% on balances up to £2500. Overdraft the same.

All of these accounts must be funded with £500 pcm or incur a £5 underfunding charge.

I had the Premier Direct current account, no paper statements, everything on-line, and I can tell you 100% that it came with travel insurance, I used to get the paperwork every April for the renewal. I've never heard of Premier Direct Travel, when I opened my account, there were 3 options, the Premier Direct, the Premier, and the Premier 50. My account was opened in 2005

I would strongly advise that you call Aegis to check whether you have insurance because when I started with A&L in April 2010 until the accounts were taken off sale in July, I can catagorically say that the Premier Direct DID NOT come with any insurance. Only the Premier and Premier 50.

I believe the part I've put in bold is incorrect information. My letter from Ageas starts with

"As a Premier Direct or Premier Current Account customer, you'll always be well prepared for trips abroad with your FREE annual European multi-trip travel insurance (up to the age of 65)."

I closed my account in August last year, but I still have my insurance renewal papers dated April 2010, and I have also just double checked online banking (can still access it), and it shows as a Premier Direct Account.

I have had a premier direct since it was introduced and have always had travel insurance, at first with fortis and now with ageas. i did initially have a premier so maybe part of the "upgrade" was to keep the insurance. Too long ago to remember though.

I work for Santander in a branch.

3 Types of accounts pop up.

The Premier Current Account as said comes with insurance.

The later incarnation of the Premier Direct which does not come with insurance but instead came with 5 or 6% interest. I know this categorically because I sold them myself from April to July 2010 before it went offsale.

The Premier Direct TRAVEL also pops up and this DOES come with travel insurance - however this will only be OLDER accounts opened before around 2007. However on correspondence it may be referred to as simply a "Premier Direct".

As I say, the only way to check is to call Aegeis with your account number and they will tell you if you have a Premier Direct with the insurance or not.
  • Thanks all, I called Aegis and they confirmed neither of my accounts had travel insurance associated with them, case resolved. (:

Told you. I would now kindly expect an apology from the chap who suggested I was providing misinformation.
