No because clearly it would have been faulty at the time of purchase, we are talking here about a car that has done 2000 miles perfectly ok over 2 months then broke.

But Hammyman said a car has reached the end of its life at 100k and 10 years? So where do you draw the line, 100 miles,500 miles? A gearbox doesnt necessarily just go bang in a mile, it can break over a period of miles whos to say it wasnt broken at the time of purchase and progressively got to critical.

Don't you wish you could actually sell used cars to some of the posters on this thread. I reckon you could literally drag something out of a scrapyard for some of them, and they'd be happy just to pay and drag it back for you.

I am astounded by some of the replies in this thread, basically people are saying that dealers can sell any old dog and as long as it lasts 2000 miles then thats tough.I know some people on this thread are associated with the motoring industry and are talking utter rubbish but I cant believe others seem to think that 6.5k is a drop in the ocean.

OP - I'd simply ask him to contribute the £500. That's what he reckons and at the end of the day will get you on the road quicker. Explain if it costs more that's your bad.

It'll probably cover the parts but not the labour, still better than nothing. As you will have guessed from this thread, the outcome looks undetermined and I'm sure the legal fees will be approaching the value of the car if it all gets argumentative (which it looks like it will!)

    Just my two penneth.

    Carry on chaps.

People seem to be fixated by the £6.5k :rotfl:

The cost of a new TT is almost £50k

The OP has paid about 1/8th of the cost of a new one

If someone bought a 9 year old washing machine that costs about £400 for an 1/8th of the price at £50 and the motor blew after 3 months people would say "well what do you expect" !!!
It's not just about the money

I have bought nothing but high mileage cars for decades. I expect that at some indeterminable point in the future that something will need fixing. If it does, it was expected. If it doesn't, its a bonus.

That is pretty much what is classed as end of life in the motoring sector.

The OP. They got over 2,000 miles out of it with no problem. The only way to be sure on a car at end of servicable life is to replace all the drivetrain. But then it wouldn't be £6500 but would instead be £10,000 or more and even then, there would be no guarantee that the body panels wouldn't start rusting in the following 12-24 months. To guarantee that would require a full bare metal respray with anti-corrosion work as well so thats another £5k onto the price so the car wouldn't then be £6500 or £10000 but £15000....

You would obviously be the ideal customer then.

Im fixated by the 6.5k because I'd expect a product costing that much to get me to work for more than 2.5 months!
As for your washing machine, 3 months washing for 50 quid isnt outrageous, as much as 3 months use out of a £200 quid car isnt outrageous.
However if you bought that £50 washing machine from a shop and it broke down after 5 days I,d expect it mended or my £50 refunded which puts it into perspective.

You still havent answered my question.Where are you drawing the line? 5 days? 500 miles? You keep giving me dealer waffle and not a definative answer.
