Hello,
I had an account with Natwest - which I thought had been closed in march however after receiving an e-mail today saying there was a problem with my account - I went to see if I could still log on with my details, and i can.
To my horror I have just under 1K in "unarranged OD fee" they have been taking an amount out each month but I have NEVER had an letters or anything about this.
Is there anything I can do? This couldn't have come at a worse time money wise
Dan

how did you close the account?0
-
they gave me a form to fill out0

go back to the branch you filled in the form in and see if you can raise the complaint there. Hopefully the staff member will remember receiving the form from you0

Was the account overdrawn when you completed the closure form or had you been overdrawn with charges pending?
If the answer is yes then they could not close the account until the balance had been repaid.
A grand in unauthorised charges seems to be a lot are you sure it is all charges?0 -
Letters would have been sent unless you were signed up for paperless statements (ie Digital Banking) in which case an email would have been sent to remind you log on. The only third way is if you moved house and mail was returned then they may have been marked 'back to branch'.
Your best hope is to call the lending centre where your account will presumably centrally managed from and hope for the best.0 -
I went into a natwest branch recently and filled out a form request to cancel a product that I was paying for on my accounts - this had not been processed.
So a call on the phone to complain sorted it with the charges reversed, it was no where near as high as yours but if you know the day you went in etc and there should be some way to trace this back.
Luckily I had a letter of confirmation for a visit they arranged with a bank manager which I was able to provide a date from, as that was all organised the same day I went into the branch for that intention only (to cancel product).
Good luck!0 -

A common reason why a debit balance appears after an account is "closed" is the appearance of a forgotten about Continuous Payment Authority. Can you think or tell from the online account who the first debit after "closure" was from? A CPA would be your responsibility to cancel, however you should always receive notice.
Also regarding the account charges you should also have received (pre) notification from Natwest, so the principle task is to find out what became of the Natwest notifications.
If you are not satisfied with how your concern is handled at the first time of asking, I strongly recommend you make a complaint in writing, and focus on what became of the notifications.
Have you moved home or changed you email address?0 -
I dropped the form off in march and as I never got any more statements I assumed all was well - I was never signed up for "paperless banking" I doubt anyone will remember.
the account went overdrawn in dec 10, so i (thought) i sorted it when i paid my loan off - the balance was 1.41 on the 23rd of march but the charges kept coming out.
If i have to pay cos i worked thing out wrong then fair enough but i really want to know what (if anything) i can say to get the charge amount down!0 -

If you get it all clarified that you weren't getting statements etc I can't see how they can justify that total charges on that balance try and sort it out at branch if you are not happy with outcome tell them you are taking it further with the financial ombudsman but try get paperwork to keep as proof for your case and take copies.
Was there any confirmation of the closure? I have shut an account with another high street bank and they didn't give me any formal notification of closure which I thought was poor but might be common practise in keeping paper costs low! :rotfl:0
