I would raise a concern regarding the non account closure.

    https://www.natwest.com/secure/global/contact_us/complaints_procedure.htm

If you call the Customer Lending Centre on 02380 226443 option 2 then 4 they will be able to discuss all the charges with you.

If you log onto your online banking and click on statements > Bank statements then select Pre-advice of Interest and Charges from the drop down menu you can view all your previous notification of charges.

Are you saying the balance was £1.41, you paid in £1.41 and then "dropped the form off". (BTW do you mean handed it to reception or a cashier?)

One for the "bank experts", if an account closure form was received but the account was liable for a few pennies residual interest, would (should?) that be brought to the customer's attention by letter?

Go back and see then and ask for a full break down, and find out what 'actually' happened to your account.

    Would this be ~5 months x ~30 days/month x £6/day unarranged overdraft charge?

A common reason why a debit balance appears after an account is "closed" is the appearance of a forgotten about Continuous Payment Authority.

When a bank account is closed all the direct debits are cancelled, so nothing more should ever go out. The system is completely different to CPAs on credit cards.

Not if the debit card 16 digit long number was used.

Im presuming the OP still had either pending transactions or charges when the account was closed.

Naughty really as they should have been advised there may have been pending transactions on the account.
