Thanks Helen. Unfortunately I don't think he cared at all. He thought it was ok to track mud through my house (I have cream carpets).

Hi Tine, I have a huge bottle of white vinegar. Will this do the trick? So far the loo has had three coats of toilet cleaner and a third of a bottle of neat Dettol down it.

White vinegar is exactly the ticket :)

Infact if you are likely to throw out the bedding buthave washed it... then rip it into strips SOAK in neat or 50/50 vinegar/water mix and then cover the inside of the toilet from the rim down to water level (use rubber gloves if it's yucky) and give the water a good splash of vinegar too. Now close the lid and leave it until at least late afternoon but ideally leave it until tomorrow morning :)

again use rubber gloves and then remove all the soaked bedding straight into a bin! take the loo brush and give it a quick scrub :) hopefuly that should have brought back the lovely shine :)

The bathtub - if it's got scum marks or especially limescale then do the same, also the taps! soak the cloth in 50/50 vinegar water and wrap it round anything with limescale - give it a few hours if it's really bad then remove and the limescale will wipe off :) I live in a hardwater area and I have to go through a descale once a month on everything but with vinegar it's a doddle :)

Let us know hoe you are getting on :)

    l. I feel like a failure and a bad person to be left with a mess like this from a so called friend whose also a distant relative. He certainly wasn't brought up like that!

It's not you that's the failure so stop these negative thoughts right now! You're a kind, caring person whose only fault was to trust someone to respect your home.

You helped someone out at a time they most needed it, provided bed and board for much longer than you anticipated, at great cost to yourself.

You're lodger's behaviour isn 't a slur on you, so don't take it personally. He just has different - apparently much lower - standards than you have. I agree it's an appalling way to behave (and I'd hate to think he didn't appreciate your kindness) but don't let it get to you.

Get the room back to the way you like it, and then congratulate yourself on being such a great person. (But don't let him back!)

    love & hugs

  • Throw out all the bedding (would you ever want to sleep in it again?). Replacements aren't expensive.

Happens to everyone now and then when they take a lodger in. Some are good. Some aren't. Just the way things are.

Get the room clean and in a week or so you'll be right as rain!

    How horrible!

All the tips you have been given are great, and just wanted to add one more. If you have to wash down your painted walls start from the bottom not the top. This is because if dirty streaks fall onto dry walls they will stain and be very difficult to remove, but if they fall onto damp walls, they can be very easily wiped away. Hope this helps.

    Best wishes

Thanks everyone. Feeling a little less miserable about it all. The duvet has been washed and dried and is ok, the pillows I think I might have to chuck as they haven't come up ok. Neutradol'd the carpets and the matress. Just got to vax the carpets now, now that the 'smell' has gone and its a bit more pleasant to work in. Cleaned the windows last night and washed the curtains, blinds are getting oxy'd tonight. Will remember tip about cleaning the walls, thanks Nicki.
