Know that equation, t.j. - I left NZ in 1972, have returned following the death of both parents, then 4 years ago[the first time in 20 years to not only the day, but even the flight time!]
Leaving in the early 70's was by ship and took a whole lot more saving for - around £3k as I recall..
The 'Travel Overseas' exodus was not abnormal then, but only a few of us came away for keeps. France and I fell in love -absolute coup de foudre - from the first Lunchtime Club session offered given by a then exotic rarity, a newly-arrived Pommy teacher with a blue rinse perm...how grateful I am to her now.
    She lit the blue touchpaper.

But I also have a wanderlust for the Oz of Tim's Minton and Minchin.
Hope you've read the one and seen the other...................

Didn't want to read and run...congratulations on your recent debtfree-ness. I'm a little jealous but also inspired by your story.

Best of luck with your savings and a whole new life without being saddled by debt. I'm dreaming of the same for me one day.

Thanks so much. Just stay focused on your end goal of being debt free. I lost focus a lot and was in debt a lot longer than I needed to be. I hope you can feel this relief soon too. Good luck!

  • Just read through your diary, it must feel amazing to be debt free.

I'm also wanting to save for a house deposit, I won't be able to start until the new year so I'm going to try and get myself as focused as possible for spending little and saving a lot!

  • Now my aim is to get debt free and get the family to Aus for a holiday. At the moment we'd need about 10,000 to get flights out there, passports and spends for the holiday of a lifetime....and that's with a place to stay as my family live there.
You have to start to finish.

Yeah it isn't cheap. It's what most of my credit card debt was made of, a couple of trips to Aus, and that's staying with my Parents. I wonder if going next year AND a house deposit is kidding myself!
