Careful with the Cooperative Bank Cashminder - The Visa Debit card is in fact a Visa Electron Card, although branded as Visa Debit it won't work in certain places... ie paying for train tickets from a conductor on train or Tesco's petrol pumps to name a few."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0

If she is going to be a student this academic year? That will usually mean banks will be tripping over themselves to give her a student current account and the perks that go with such an account.God save the King!
I'll save Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, J. M. W. Turner and Alan Turing.0 -
I think the best option would be for them to apply for an account in branch.
The system at the end tells them which accounts they would be illegible for.
If it gives them the option for select then they should open that account rather than having to pay a fee for one.0 -
Not sure how it can be a credit rating issue if they are willing to give her the select silver if she pays £8 a month..?? Surely if it was her credit rating she wouldn't qualify for that either? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

If she applies for the basic account and uses it for about 6 months and uses it well she will be able to upgrade no problem.0

There's no need for an account to be applied for. The account is changed to the Select Account internally.
In short either the person in the branch is very poorly trained or being deliberately misleading.0 -
Im sorry to argue with you stclair, however the OP went into branch to do this upgrade, perhaps they'd be better doing the upgrade online.
Oophs I didnt realise they went into branch originally branch staff are sharks as you can imagine they need to hit there targets. The staff will always offer a fee paying account first before they offer them anything else.
In that case they would be better selecting there own account type online.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
