Parking Permit- proof of insurance!?

Hi
I've just been given an application form for a parking permit at university.
They are requiring copies of my drivers licence, insurance and MOT. They also want to know when my car and HOME insurance are up for renewal!
Does anyone know if they are allowed to ask for all of this information before allowing me to park on campus?
Thanks
Brigid

I'd say yes, just to cover themselves and to be sure everything is above board. Never having applied for a permit I can't answer but I don't remember my ex-wife having to do this when she obtained her work parking permit; she's a nurse.0

I can understand the drivers license and insurance/mot, but I would personally assume the home insurance renewal is a bit much.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

I can understand all of it except the home insurance? That's not a legal requirement, so can't you just say you don't have any? They can't penalise you for that surely? I have to provide insurance, MOT, service history and driving license to work before they will pay my travel expenses and issue my parking permit, but home insurance?!?0

Good point, what if you tell them you're homeless? Or use the car for shelter while bathing in sport centres or service station showers like truckies.0

Is the permit/parking system operated by the Uni themselvers or by an outsourced contractor?
Because the only reason I can think of for asking this is to make your personal info more attractive to a bunch of scammers to resell.
I don't think they need anything beyond your car registration and basic ID really.0 -
It sounds to me like excessive and unnecessary collection of personal data, which would be a breach of the Data Protection Act.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

A copy of a driving licence becomes a fake document, a forgery.
The parking company want this information so they can intimidate you for the fake parking tickets they are planning on using, they are getting a bit fed up with paying DVLA fee's and getting ignored.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Sorry but that is pure nonsense.0 -
Nope its TRUE also it is true that they need a exemption certificate or licence from Crown Copyright to copy driving licences which must be show if requested prior to taking copies, however they wont have one, because they dont have one and they are only issued to financial organisations for money laundering and fraud prevention, anything else is an illegal copy and for a damned good reason, to stop people using the details to make fake ID documents.
Ask them to provide this certificate, I am sure Crown would be very interested in a university breaking its copyright.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Cover themselves for/against what?
Please clarify.0
