I am very surprised you were not asked about medical history, as this is one of the fundamental exclusions. I have only just taken mine out, and my two kittens are only 18 weeks and 5 days old
, yet I was still asked to confirm that there was nothing existing I knew about. £9-odd is also a good price, especially for a dog, as my cats are £11-odd and £12-odd per month (male is more expensive). Who did you insure with out of interest?
Not asked at all about medical history, mind you he is under 2 yrs old, when I got him he had had his first injections because they were documented on his card so I registered him with the local vet and they sent me a reminder when his second injection was due, which he had , also I had to get is microchip number changed to my address and the new vet scanned him for that.............
Ive just got billies paperwork folder out and dated 16 march 11 I took him to the vets for his vaccination/booster and the receipt say vac and full body check.....£39.90.....nothing has been documented about billies back end cos he never had a problem then , its only been past 3 weeks......................0 -

When my old dog became ill the vet didn't have a clue what was wrong with him and scanned, xrayed, tested and kept him in for 4 days without a concluding diagnosis.
That all cost a fortune, then my dog was getting sicker by the day so was referred to a veterinary teaching practise. More scans and tests discovered he was riddled with cancer and a tumour on his spleen had ruptured. The poor old fella couldn't be saved and had to be put to sleep there and then.
I was beyond devastated and believe me, the last thing I needed to worry about that day was money.
The bills totalled nearly £4000 and insurance covered all but the excess of £50.
It was worth every penny of the premiums over the years to know that was one thing less to be frantic about.0 -

Phew me thats a lot of dosh. after reading a lot of stories on here im glad I bought the insurance................I may never use it or I may use it alot, thats the gamble you take with buying insurances..... My other little dog rosie is 16 chihuahua she has had breast cancer twice and each time I paid for the operations as I never had insurance , probaly cost me just over £510.. so I think its not too bad in 16 yrs, but having 2 dogs and no insurance is a bit of a risk ,:eek:if you havnt got any savings put by for emergencies .......................no insurance company would take rosie on at her age now I wouldnt have thought, she is half blind/half deaf..................but she still enjoys her walk to the beach and plenty of food and our lovely warm bed..bless her..:D0 -

It's all very well putting £20 a month away instead but what if, say, your dog runs out and gets hit by a car when he's a year old and your £20 a month is only about £200 by then?
A bill you just can't pay leaves you with the most horrendous decision to have to make...to have to let your dog go because you can't afford to help him back to health.
I always have had, and always will have, insurance for all my dogs.0 -
We got our 10 week old Staffie-Bruce- his second injection and his microchip last night (no-he didn't like that very much), and we got the 4 week free PetPlan insurance with that-however we asked the vet what she would recommend as insurance, and although she said that she wasn't allowed to recommend anyone, but hinted very broadly about lifetime cover etc..in other words PetPlan (which was whispered to me very quietly at the end of the appointment).
We got home and insured him immediately, although they didn't ask if he was chipped or not, it did ask if he was neutered. Obviously he's a bit young yet for that, although he is getting done when he's a tad older. The sense of relief was enormous! I always dread getting a huge vets bill (got 5 cats and an 11 year old lab).
I found their rates not too bad compared to others-we'd looked at Sainsburys etc-but they only did yearly cover. Although the insirance is still higher than it is to insure our car!..
I do NOT agree with putting the money away instead of insurance. That's a total no brainer!Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x
If you can't stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them.
I will respect your opinions, even if I don't agree with them0 -
I've always had insurance cover for my dogs despite my vet advising us to save money into a savings account for the dog. When my old boy reached 11 last year the premiums with Tesco went up to £36.00 per month. Being a bright spark decided it was time to cancel his insurance. BIG mistake because yestrday he was diagnosed with a Squamous - Cell carcinoma on his front paw. I'm fortunate that I can afford his vet bills but do wish I hadn't been so stupid to cancel his insurance after all those years.0

Yes thats sods law to cancel it then five mins later big regret.............Ive got my policy through and he is insured the day I took the ins out, he is covered for £4000 per illness, I suppose in a way it may not be enough, depending what crops up....if it was a broken leg I would have thought that would cover bills.........they do not ins dogs for any kind of teeth or gum problems .....................so im going to start to clean his teeth:eek:being near 2 he has perfect nashers at present......
Obviously will not cover for existing medical conditions, but he hasnt got any previous medical problems on record at the vets...............the next time( IF) his back legs go funny then I will take him to get him checked out, im hoping he had cramp before......................0
