I have dealt with vairous insurance companies having had a few dogs in the past. I found that Petplan was the best. I was lucky i went for the superem cover as one of my dogs ended up with a £18,000 bill at the age of 2.

Wow, now that is a bill! My policy is for "only" £7,000 vets fees per year - I was thinking that should be plenty

None, insurance is the oldest scam in history.
If it was not all insurance companies would be bankrupt.
Open a savings account and put your premium in here and dont touch it, over the dogs life you will save money, lots of money. If the dog falls ill use the fund to pay for treatment.

nice theory ! if you have a healthy bank account ,my mum has had to pay out close to £1100 for her 1 yr old dog ,she got all but £56 back from argos ins, saving your premium maybe a good idea but if you save £20 pcm and you are faced with a big bill how exactly do you pay ?

Great - I am sure that would cover the 5k of operations one my cat turned out to need.....

Pls do not advice people against taking out insurance.

10 each month is 120 per year, I had a vet bill for over £2200 yesterday for just ONE leg operated, George will need another one operated on too so there is no way this amount can be saved up by "10 in a tin each month". George is only 1 year old, turned out he has arthritis in both knees, stage 3 so needed to operate to make sure he has good quality of life for his remaining time...

Wow thats very unfair for such a young pet,I suppose a lot of people have no alternative but to have their beloved pets put down when they get ill.......................are you insured?.......If you are told that your pet would cost you £18000, like the other poster said , would people do it somehow or have them put to sleep?...........Theres no way I could afford to pay that amount and getting a loan would also be out of the question............dam me its like having a mortgage.........

Well thanks to you all for giving me your own opinions on pet I nsurance :Tand I decided to buy some, its costing me £9.17 per month:)....I wasnt asked whether billy has any medical problems, and they know how old he is/what pedigree/how much we paid for him/and that all his vacinations are up to date/and that he his micro chipped /and he his registered with the local vet..............I didnt volunteer any information ,only what they asked for......in any case I dont know whether he has any problems with the back end, but should ithappen again I will then go to the vets.....thanks your posts they were helpful...and very sorry to hear that some of you are having a financial hard time with your pets............

If you ever make a claim - the insurance will ask your vet for a full prior medical history and base dtheir judgement (pre existing condition or not) on that history.

If you had taken your dog with any particular problem to the vet (before having him insured) and then try to claim for it later - it may not be covered.

Remember that whataver happens within 14 days of taking up the policy may not be covered (ilness) unless it is an accident.

Who did you for at the end?

Yes, all my 7 are insured... Argos Platinum.
  • Yup, I was just going to say check the policy exclusion period when it arrives.

It may be 14 days as Gettingready says, but some are longer .....

I am very surprised you were not asked about medical history, as this is one of the fundamental exclusions. I have only just taken mine out, and my two kittens are only 18 weeks and 5 days old :), yet I was still asked to confirm that there was nothing existing I knew about. £9-odd is also a good price, especially for a dog, as my cats are £11-odd and £12-odd per month (male is more expensive). Who did you insure with out of interest?

Yes its 7 days I was told that when I telephoned today but thats okay ..............ive never taken Billy to the vets with his back end problem as its a very recent thing and only happened twice over a 3 week period , thats why I decided I think I ought to get him insured............he is not in any pain and runs about everywhere gets 2 walks on the beach daily..............So I wouldnt think I will go to the vets within the next 2 weeks.............But should it happen more often then I will take him......................................
  • I pay about £12.50/month for both my cats (total) - lifetime cover etc (I got a multi-pet discount).

I am looking to hunt around at renewal (reminds me I must phone vet for details of medical history) as I'd like their cover to be a bit higher (currently £3k).
