I have spent my life spelling my name. Even though it is a traditional [boring] 4 letter name, there are 2 versions and people assume it is the other version.0 -

My son's name is Ben. Not Benjamin or Benedict. Guess what some people call him?
If a name can't be shortened, it will be lengthened.
I have quite a funny story about this. We knew a guy who was a plain ordinary teacher at the school my husband also taught at, and occasionally came to our house for parties etc. He got promoted and eventually became Principal of the school. By this time Ben was in the Sixth Form, and the Principal had called him Benjamin for the umpteenth time,. Ben (politely, not cheekily) said 'Mr ?....., if you call me Benjamin one more time, I'll tell the whole school how you once got drunk at my parents' house and sang Land of Our Fathers at the top of your voice in Welsh with the teacher who is now the Assistant Principal.' Mr ?..... did have a laugh and did try very hard not to call him Benjamin again!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Out of that list I like Joshua. We were going to call 1st DD Daniel if she was a boy, or Matthew.
My Dad's gone through life with a fairly common name, spelt in the very uncommon Welsh way. It's caused him no end of grief....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I know 2 people who have daughters called Izobelle and Jazmine. A bit pointless to be honest as most people would just put an S instead of the Z.
On the subject of names that can't be shortened, my Dad apparently chose my name on this basis. I'll give you a clue, it's a purple flower.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -
Pansy?
I like Oliver. Not a big fan of Joshua, think its far too common x:j:jOur gorgeous baby boy born 2nd May 2011 - 12 days overdue!!:j:j0 -
I work in a school and this year we have a Kamran and a Rheeyan coming through. Sometimes it seems like the parents just use the letters left in the scrabble bag at the end of the game.
Mind you Isobel/Isabelle/Ysabel is a perfectly normal name and we have NINE different spellings."A savoury muffin?? As if life wasn't disappointing enough!" Miranda0 -

We have friends whoes little girl's name is Isabel (spelt that way) as she was born in Spain and they were living in Spain at the time and spelt this way it is acceptable in both English and Spanish (It is Spanish for Elizabeth).(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Violet? Could be "Vi", though (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
They are all lovely names - and proper names at that.
Last week I read somewhere about a celeb of sorts calling her child 'Egypt'; another was 'Bingham".
It seems that some people just pick random words.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0
