How soon after wedding to go on honeymoon?

OK, this is going to sound really daft!

Our wedding is on a Saturday. Our families are staying with us at the hotel on the Sunday night as well, just so that we can have some time with them after all the madness of the big day. I would like to spend a couple of days with them, maybe go back to my mum's house for a night or two, spend some time with friends and neighbours etc who were at the wedding. This is quite common where we live.

OH wants us to go on honeymoon on the Monday - straight from the hotel. His reasoning is that it will make the honeymoon longer and we can catch up with people when we get back. I am reluctant to do this; am I being unreasonable? :o What did everyone else do, or what are you planning to do?

We had the wedding on Saturday, had lunch with everyone on Sunday and drove to the airport, then flew off for a month on Monday. Have spent plenty of time since wombling around seeing people, showing them photos etc.
  • I suppose it would depend on how much time you can take off work, and how long you want to go away for. If you can take three weeks off after the wedding then you could go away for 2 weeks and have 1 week catching up with people; whether that is before or after the honeymoon won't make much difference. Unless of course family members live some way away, or have very busy jobs or lives, in which case it would be easier to see people when they're already nearby and with time to spare. If you can only take the amount of time off that you want to go away for then maybe think about booking time with various friends and relatives for after you get back to get round and see everyone.

FWIW, I think we may have a similar issue - we both have relatives who live a long distance from us and who we don't get to see very often, as well as some elderly relatives who may not be able to make it to the wedding. I feel as though we should take a few days to spend time with people before they go back home, as well as travel to see anyone who can't make it to the wedding. Whether we do this before or after the honeymoon will depend on how much time we can get off work!

  • We got married on the Saturday, flew off on early on Tuesday - was absolutely perfect for us, but I think your plans sound very nice too.

:) Just cause I like to be different.

We're getting married on the Tuesday, having our reception on the Saturday, and hopefully going off on honeymoon on the following Tuesday for a week. Well this is the plan anyway - am going to book the honeymoon in the start of November.
  • We went 2 weeks after the wedding; we postponed as we had a friends wedding the weekend after ours, so we just took 3 days off in the cotswolds straight after the wedding.

I was initially reluctant to postpone, but it ended up being the best idea ever.

    1) With all the last minute pre-wedding preps I'm not sure when we would've found time to pack for the honeymoon
    2) We got to have a proper catch up with people the day after the wedding with a relaxed BBQ
    3) We had time to reflect on all the happy memories of the day & avoided post-wedding blues as we still had a hols to look forward to
    4) We weren't knackered on our honeymoon so we were able to enjoy loads of activities.

We got married on a Saturday, stayed in a hotel that night, came home on the Sunday, sorted all the wedding stuff out and packed ready to fly out for our honeymoon on the Monday.

  • We're getting married on a thursday and planning the honeymoon for the saturday. Having said that I'm off 2 weeks before the wedding to plan pack and organise. X

When you get married, the whole point of the honeymoon is to spend time alone with your new spouse .... not sit and sup tea with your family!!

I'd expect to go on honeymoon soonest - and all phones turned off for the entire duration of the honeymoon.
