Blogging

I've set up a blog a while back and put up a few posts and signed up to adsense etc.

However, I am struggling to get anyone to read my blogs and therefore, click the adverts.

Anyone got any suggestions how I can increase the amount of traffic to my blogs? (Apart from writing more interesting subjects - I am working on that lol)

Thanks in advance.

    1. Choose a niche that has high paying keywords (if that makes no sense, google for keyword research) and buy a relevant domain if you are using blogger, etc.

    2. Tighten your niche (general "my thoughts" blogs rarely perform well), provide product reviews or useful guides.

    3. Link to other relevant blogs/websites.

    4. Request links from relevant blogs/websites (one-way links in are best, but reciprocal links are better than no links at all)

    5. Write new content (daily if possible)

    6. Rinse and repeat...

There are few quick fixes (in life or in blogging) so be prepared to wait months or even years before you make anything like decent money.

I have several blogs/websites earning £400-500 each per month, but in all cases they have well over 250 posts/pages, are very targeted and have been running for over a year. I also have a blog which get 50,000+ visitors a month, but only makes me a few £'s a day.
  • I learnt about making money through blogging from this great site called Squidoo. They have a large tutorial base and you can make some money from it. After two years now I get about USD 20 frm this site montly. Its small but if pays for my internet bill. So my internet addiction is covered. I have now branch out with my own website . I use the lesson learnt in Squidoo to improve my page rank on google:j:j:j

Thank your for your advice both Jingo and azmilsyahmi, I'll look into doing all of it.

I appreciate it would be slow to get decent traffic and returns but at the moment I haven't even earnt a penny lol.

Thank you again to both of you.

The niche is the key to making money. Do so research on which keywords are high payers and plan your content around that niche.

I would advise staying away from things like finance and hosting (both of which generally have high CPC) as they are hugely competitive and big companies spend a lot of money to keep themselves high in the search results.

Sadly, the subjects that are very easy to create content for (films, videogames, books, etc) usually perform incredibly badly with Adsense.

If you want to PM me with your blog url, I will happily take a look and give you some more detailed advice :)
  • Good posts Jingo, thanks.

Sorry to hijack but could you answer a few of questions for me too please?!

1: Is it essential to have your own domain to make money blogging or can you do it via a blog on wordpress for example?

2: What size webspace/bandwith would I need for a standard blog if I was to go down the route of hosting?

3: Can you recommend any hosting/domain registration sites?

    Thanks :)
  • Some tips on how to get up the rankings in Google. Plus how to increase views and link building is always helpful as well.

    1. It isn't essential to have your own domain, but I think it helps, both in terms of giving you a bit more control over the keywords in your url and giving your blog a more professional feel. There are, however, some VERY successful blogs around which still use the .blogspot domain.

2 and 3. You really don't need to spend massive amounts to host a blog at the start. Heart Internet are one of the hosts that I use. They are competitively priced, offer good customer support and the hardware they use is reliable. 1 & 1 are also very good almost identically priced.

You can start on the cheapest hosting package (£2.50 per month) and just upgrade as you need to when the traffic and money start coming in.

One last question, how will I know when I need to upgrade? Will the hosting site make me aware?
  • To the OP, I don't know how much you know about HTML, but there's a number of little tweaks you can do to boost your Page rank. Meta tags are very simple to implement, but targeted correctly (and unique to each page you have), can be very effective.

Other simple things that help are clicking through to your site on Google, pinging your blog on aggregator sites like ping-o-matic, and depending on the content, commenting on similar blogs, leaving your blog address as a footer.
  • Thanks to all that have replied. I've looked over your comments and my blogs and decided I am going to start a fresh (some isn't very well written and are in very high competitive areas.) as there isn't much done yet and I'm not one to flog a dead horse I'm going start again better researched and hopefully earn some money lol.

To deselby - unfortunately I know nothing about HTML (I intend to learn but as the old saying goes there never seems to be enough hours in the day.)

Thanks to all the replies, You've given me some good advice and pointed me in the right direction.
