Ocado do a £15/20 (£60 or £80 spend) off a first shop - If you haven't used them before this equates to a 25% reduction in the cost of formula.

These offers often exclude baby milk, cigarettes, stamps, etc. I don't know if the Ocado one does.

The offer that I just spoke about (Ocado) didn't, I bought SMA gold in bulk 2 weeks ago
  • I changed to HIPP organic at £6.90 when my baby bought back up every other milk.

The formula is available everywhere, so that's what you feed them on!

I don't see why it should be made cheaper?

I know it is available everywhere - that is not the issue. The issue is that for those mothers who CANNOT breastfeed (not everyone can!) are being punished for it almost by having to pay ridiculously expensive prices for baby milk. I am sure it does not cost as much as £9 per tin to produce the baby milk and therefore the companies which make it, are making a great profit at the expense of others who have no choice but to buy their product.

Because, as a general rule, it's a lot cheaper for the NHS if more people breastfeed.

Why is it cheaper for the NHS if more women breastfeed?

I don't think breastfed babies require any less medical treatment than bottle fed, plenty of BF babies still get reflux and colic and other usual baby 'illnesses'.

Why not? My DS is 2 and on cows milk now and I am sure I spend not that much less on cows milk per week/ten days for him, and that has far less processing, packaging and safety checks than formula milk, which is as I understand it derived from cows milk.

Clearly the companies make some profit otherwise they wouldn't make it, but how much do you think it costs to make then?

conveniently, when you try to google what the manufacturing cost is for baby formula - nothing relevant crops up ;)

but with this recent article - http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2010/sep/23/price-baby-food-raised

It gives some idea of their profit levels being I would imagine a minimum of 30% based on the current price of £9....

also, you can buy 4 pints of cow's milk for £1.10 if you are shopping MSE style - I think 4 pints would easily last a week for one child as opposed to £9 per week for a tin of formula. Even if you were buying 8 pints of milk a week, it is still significantly cheaper than formula milk.

  • Ounce for ounce formula is cheaper than cows milk when made up in to liquid form.

that may be true but by the time your child is drinking cow's milk, it is not their sole form of nourishment therefore 4 pints of cow's milk will last longer for a toddler than a tin of formula for a baby.

I think it's one of those things you have to accept, everyone is paying the same I guess so not much you can do. It is expensive, but so is feeding grown ups.
