    What its against the rules to deposit cash in someone else's account??? ...

    I don't think anybody was referring to the paying-in bit when they said it was against the rules. Rather, they meant the bit about drawing the £40 out from the ATM afterwards.

    Excellent idea, i hadnt thought of that! What details does one need to deposit funds into her acct?

    You only need the sort code and acc number to deposit money

    Some ATM's have CCTV cameras over them and some banks do watch the footage particularly at this time of year.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    (If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

    I very much doubt they could recognise each customers face:rotfl: she could use a wig and false moustache :rotfl:

    or maybe an ATM at another branch / bank to withdraw the funds

    OP, can you set up your own basic account and then online banking for your mother's account? Then when you need to withdraw money on her behalf she can transfer it to your account and you can take it out.

    You get the advantages of
    (i) building a relationship with a bank/society;
    (ii) avoiding eventually coming into contact with a teller who decides to report your activity;
    (iii) if anything bad happens to your mother's account, an investigation won't reveal that she's been giving out her card/info. This may result in a bank decision that she was grossly negligent even if the account abuse had nothing to do with you.

    Re (iii) - I recall wondering (it didn't go further than wondering!) many years ago whether I should let my brother use my debit card. My understanding of my account T&C suggested that possibility.

    If your Mother's account is ever used fraudulently, and she's disclosed the PIN to you, there would be a high risk of the bank refusing to settle the fraud claim.

    This is a barmy arrangement that should cease.

    I don't believe this ! Do you think banks know what ALL their customers look like ? How on earth would they know it wasn't the customer who was using the card ?

    The risk, as I mentioned above and opinions4u clarified, is if fraudulent activity appears on the mother's account. In this thread, someone describes fraudulent ATM use. One of the steps described as taken is for the police to view CCTV.

    The police would trivially see that it wasn't the mother accessing the account and ask, "Do you know that man?" The honest answer would be, "Oh, that's my son, I gave him my card and PIN," and all bets would be off as far as recovering money. Recall that this sort of fraud tends to be a civil matter, and that's judged approximately on balance of probabilities.

    The bank might not notice as long as no irregularity appears on the account. But essentially making yourself liable for any losses your mother may suffer in the future doesn't seem worth it for the convenience of not opening, say, a Co-Op Cashminder or something else which is available to almost anyone.

    I understand what you're saying.
    What i was commenting on is the fact that in my experience (17 years in the fraud department of a bank) i've never heard of banks randomly checking cctv footage at a particular time of year !
    Where i work there doesn't seem to be a particular time of year for ATM fraud, it happens all the time ! What the OP is doing isn't a good idea, we all agree on that one.
